Knee pain when riding

Wondered if anyone else has experienced this, but for the past few months when I'm riding I get a sharp pain on the outside of my left knee. It's not really the knee so much as beside the knee, whatever that muscle/ligament is? It can make riding faster than a walk incredibly painful. I only ever have the pain when riding, and not always. It's the same whether I'm riding my horse or a different horse. Any ideas? I also cycle a lot and never have any issues with it when cycling. I'm thinking I should get it looked at as it's showing no signs of improvement, but who do you go to for things like this - the GP, or do I need to go private as it's sports related?

Personally, I would go to an osteopath joint related because my osteopath is brilliant. Also, you can actually see an osteopath, whereas doctors (at least mine) are reluctant to see anyone. However, I would say that a good osteopath will be honest about whether is it something they can treat or not, they won't string you along.

You could try your GP in the first instance and see what they say. They may refer you to a physio.

Although you say you don’t have trouble when cycling it is a classic cycling injury whereby the tendon rubs on the bone causing tendonitis. An anti inflammatory should help ease it, either in tablet form or use Volterol Gel and rub in well before you ride. If you can let your leg hang loose or lengthen your stirrups so the knee is in a slightly different position it might help. In the long term rest is the answer which isn’t always the easiest thing to do.

Thank you so much this is all really helpful, this has honestly plagued me for months as I had no idea where to start with this one! I'll try your tips first Lindylouanne, and then perhaps see the GP as a last resort (feels a bit first world problems at the moment!).

I'm currently hobbling around with no riding as I have both knees spained after an injury. So this is somewhat sensitive for me ?
Just get them checked with the GP. Not worth it buggering them up and taking weeks to heal.
Up until the above I personally found riding in metal stirrups a no no, I only use plastic/flexi ones now which helps. Try to ride longer too, not too short leathers.
