Evening all, can anyone tell me how to poultice a knee?

Horse has a big hot knee, not lame and not sure how he has done it (individual turnout, does not kick stable door, not falls etc) but he does have lots of brambles in his field so my riding instructor has suggested I try poulticing it to see if he has a thorn in there.

I have never poulticed a knee before, how is it normally done?

Mega thanks for any suggestions!

p.s am cold hosing it, he is in at night and out during the day, planning to keep riding if he is still sound, has full range of movement, flexing doesn't make him lame and he's fairly happy to have it poked and prodded!

I've no idea about poulticing a knee, but I do know that if I had a horse with such a hot, swollen knee I would definitely be asking a vet to visit. It's just not worth risking an infection in the knee joint which could prove very costly, intensive and difficult to treat. Way better to get onto things sooner rather than later where joints are concerned.

Hope he is soon on the mend.

Agree with getting the vet, but the best way to poultice the knee is to get a nappy which will secure the poultice and then bandage in a figure of eight over the nappy.
