Hi all

My horse fell on me about 6 weeks ago, and fell on my right knee. since then it has been a little bit sore when riding short in my jump saddle, but since yesterday i have been in excruitating pain, and can hardly bend it, i think i am off the see a medic on my day off on friday!
i just wanted to ask, does anyone else experience knee pain when riding with short stirrups, and what do you do to ease it?
do you think the design of stirrup iron or saddle can help? my jump saddle is not very forward cut and doesnt realy suport my knees, but then we shouldnt be gripping with our knees, so i dont really know!

any thoughts appreciated, thank u

I've ruptured my ACL in my left knee, so have no ligament in there at all any more!! I find riding very short of very long fine, it's the inbetween lenghts that cause me problems, but nothing standing bolt upright in the saddle for a few seconds doesn't fix.. By short and long i mean dressage length and racing length, the inbetween lengths are SJing and XC...

I have problems with my knees if I ride short, which I tend to do even when not jumping. Within about 30 minutes on a hack my left one is particularly sore and stiff and getting off is painful. I'm trying cortaflex high strength for a few months to see if it helps and I do find that my flexible stirrups help. I have a GP saddle and doesn't give me much knee contact either. I have a feeling I'll have real problems with them in a few more years (I'm 41 now) but for now I just manage the pain with nurofen and keep smiling

hello, I get sore knees when riding in short stirrups (doesn't help that I had surgery earlier this year for a major knee injury) the physio says it is to do with me having mega long legs but also that you have to condition the knees to being in a jumping position, esp xc as it is hard work for them. But if you've recently injured it, its maybe best not to be riding short, you might have a bit of damage to a ligament or tendon that a physio will sort out. Someone suggested to me that the flexible stirrup irons could be helpful for sore knees but I found that they only made it worse. Hope this helps! p.s, the doctor may say NO RIDING!

Hi,my horse also fell on me a couple of weeks ago,and I found riding in short stirrups painfull and stiff!rubbing arnica cream on my knee as often as I can has helped me,it really is a miricle cream, you can get it from any good hearbalist/health shop.Hope you'll be better soon.

I have had knee surgery and have very troublesome knees. I actually have more problems with my feet going completely numb riding short than my knees themselves. But they do ache and I cannot have leg ups! I have found flexible stirrups really good especially out hunting where you are in the saddle riding xc length for long periods of time.
Joint ace is really good as a suppliment it made a huge difference just after surgery.

Oooh I sympathise with you. I am 7 months post ACL reconstruction, I also injured my meniscus (cartilage) which was removed. Part of my problem was bending my knee which caused pain, since having the meniscus removed prior to the ACL recon, this problem went, however, now that I'm back in the saddle x5 yesterday, I have found that I do ride longer (good as I do dressage) and cant tolerate short stirrups at present, but ok on the rower/cross trainer/bike/stepper in the gym.........

It might be worth getting a physio to check out your knee to rule out meniscus tear as this is the most common injury and is possible in a fall. Good luck xx

i have stiff clicky knees (im only 22 god knows how they will be in 40 years!) i HAVE to ride in sprenger style stirrups. for showing classes i ride in standard style stirrups and i really feel it, for days after too.
i ride in the bow balance sprengers now and they have really helped me.

thank you everyone, i think i may look into these bendy stirrups, sprenger seems to get lots of votes
im off to see the sports physio on monday, i have a feeling she may tell me to not ride,
