Hi has anyone got any ideas please?

my mare has developed a lump on the inside of one of her knees, it is soft on top but very hard and feels like bone underneath. I have been injured and friends have been taking care of her, so I don't know when it first appeared. I first noticed it on Thursday when the softness did not seem to be there just a very hard lump.
On Tuesday she was slightly lame on the lunge but on the other leg and had had her shoes done that day so I assumed she was just sore and took her in, when lunged the next morning was not lame. But then the next day (Thursday) was lame on the lung on the leg where the swelling is but not lame when trotted up the yard and this is when I found the lump.

It is not hot and she doesn't react when I mess/prod with it but does lift her leg when I brush it (not normal in 10 years of brushing her!) and seems to be shifting the weight on that leg a lot.
It is about the right size for a splint and feels similar but too high up?
If anyone has any ideas what it is I would be really grateful

Thanks

My filly has the exact same thing!

It happened on one knee before I weaned her last year, and that went down after a few weeks, now its happened to the other knee about 3 weeks ago. Been using Bone Embrocation, but as with the other knee, it just takes plenty of time. Might not be same sort of thing as your mare, as we think its down to growth with my filly (she's 15.1h as a yearling!) But just to let you know, your not alone

thanks for letting me know of similar, it's nice to know it's not unheard of! I couldn't get a picture as I don't have a camera but might be able to borrow 1.
she was lame again last night so the vet came this morning, but typically she was no longer lame! But that's good really, she doesn't know what is is except suggesting the lump itself may have been there a while as it's not causing her pain and perhaps lameness is from a sprain in the field.
Anyway she is on bute and rest and see how she goes.
