Monty Knobberts and Princess Priscilla the Useless Yard Kitten are really going at it this week. After the weekend's dismount fiasco (which ended up with me landing in a heap on top of the slightly speshul fox terrier, the kitten perched on top of a wall and Monty taking evasive action behind a bush) a ceasefire seems ever further away. I'm going to set up video cameras to monitor the situation... and I will of course post my findings as an investigative journalist on here. I may also have to get a UN negotiator in to begin peace talks as the area is getting increasingly volatile and my patience is distinctly decreased.

I wouldn't mind quite so much but for the fact that Monty ignores every single other cat, and Priscilla ignores every single other horse. Tomorrow we begin the peace process in earnest, as tonight really was just too much... the final strawbomb.

Priscilla, who is actually a cross between a hearth-mat and a retriever (she hasn't got a notion of ever hunting anything but she does have a good recall and do a passable 'fetch'), has taken to venturing out of the house and all the way to the end of the drive when we hack out, though not through the grass as she hates getting her paws wet. There she sits and waits until we come back through the gate and then launches herself out in front of Monty, hissing. This causes Monty to do his impression of a hippo doing an impression of a giraffe doing an impression of an overweight impala on a pogo stick.

Tonight I arrived at the stables and didn't hear the usual neigh from Monty that I always get when I pull in. I wandered round into the yard and no head over the door. Odd, normally as soon as I arrive he's straight over. So I looked into the stable and he was standing in the far back corner with his head down staring intently at something. Opened the door, and there was Priscilla in his stable, engaged in a staring contest with Knobberts. I had to physically remove her from the yard before he'd move.

Popped in the school for a session of a pure knobberism (that wall that he's seen every day of his life has formed some sort of an allegiance with Priscilla and is DEFINITELY going to eat him). It was a little humid so I left my coat beside my grooming kit whilst schooling him. Once we'd finished fighting over left bend/trot impulsion/horse-eating-wall-monsters and G, who dared stand beside the fence watching for a couple of minutes (G was DEFINITELY going to eat him as well), I tied him up outside his stable to untack/rub down before turnout.

Untacked, replaced tack in tack room. Had been all of thirty seconds when I heard a Monty squeal (very distinctive, for such a big macho horse he has a very girly squeal) and much stamping. He was trying to stamp on my coat, which was taking evasive action around him. The coat did several circles then ran into a wall, with Monty the Knobber doing his best to demolish the entire stable block. Priscilla the Useless shot out from under the coat, which by this time was resembling a grass skirt, and up into the hanging basket that Knobberts had this morning attacked during an earlier escape.

Millie the little dun filly, who is half horse-half camel (she's a wobbler) then appeared beside me, as I was trying to settle Knobberts. Turns out she's learned a nifty little trick for escaping from her box (wonder where she learned that?!!) so she gave me her usual sweet little nuzzle, then calmly wandered over towards the feed room. Had to abandon peace talks for WWIII to catch her, during which few seconds Knobberts untied himself and launched an assault on the hanging basket.

The kitten is now stuck on the roof refusing to come down, Knobberts is charging around the field like he's just defeated the world's number one enemy, my coat is beyond repair (though it may make decent wall insulation) and the hanging basket, YO's pride and joy, is looking very, VERY sorry for itself in a bucket... which doesn't have a handle but sports a large split down the side since Monty played bucket-discus with it last week.

I feel like I'm living in a Carry On film

Ah! I need to meet him!! :D

I was off to bed but stayed to read and i'm now giggling to myself on the sofa like a loner nutcase! House rabbits are looking up at me half curious and half scared! :p

Thanks for the late night giggle Trish! :D :D x

HHO provides great entertainment... this has to be one of the best.

Can I request a 'Monty Knobberts weekly diary' please???. Would sure to have me, and others, in stitches!!

Hovis and Monty together take down evil kitty! - THAT I would love to see! :p

LOL :D It reminds me of when I first got B and my cat was still a kitten - he'd sleep in her manger and B would stand as far away as she could and peer at him until he hissed at her and she'd scuttle away again snorting like mad :D :D

:D LMAO here, I really can picture all this, and why do we never have a camera handy when we need one?

Cats really are on a mission to take over I think, my camera batteries had just breathed their last this afternoon when the barn kittens who have just started toddling took on the dogs.

The dogs had unwisely ventured into the workshop(kitten nursery), three kittens staggered towards them and the dogs got jammed in the doorway (Laurel and Hardy stuff - pathetic really) trying to run away. Bear in mind that these kittens are still only the size of a hand, and the dogs are big tough German Shepherd watch dogs :( All their street cred is well and truly down the pan now.:o

I shouldn't have read that at work. Now everyone in the office wants to know why I'm burying my face in my scarf, snoting with laughter, and have tears pouring down my face... :o :D :D

Very brave reporting from an obviously tense situation. I hope the casualty recovers or can be saved with some plastic surgery. And look forward to further updates from the 'front'.

Oh goodness. It's 2am and I'm sitting here trying not to wake the baby who has finally gone back to sleep, whilst trying to stifle the giggles! My cat is looking at me like I'm nuts, with tears running down my face! I really needed the giggle though, so thanks!

Another one with scarf to mouth and in tears at work! Thanks so much for the giggles; about to have a really pants day in the office so will look forward to an update :)

You took the words right out of my mouth. Another very talented and amusing narrator on here!

I want MORE :D

Brilliant! I haven't laughed so much at anything on HHO. You have found your calling as story teller/war correspondent.

Hehe, thanks all!

I love the other stories of kitten/horse warfare... makes me feel like I am not alone!

As I type this Knobberts is looking very pleased with himself lording it over the yard (tho that also possibly has something to do with the half hour he spent evading YO's capture this morning, just to rub in the hanging basket) and Princess Priscilla is attached to YM, who retrieved her from the roof this morning, and is showing no signs of letting go.:D

I keep seeing this in 'Just Jude' style cartoon captions!

Fransurrey, yes the 'Monty Knobberts' cracks me up too, and as for Princess Priscilla - every yard should have one (the phrase 'Elvis has left the building' - pops into mind)

I hope you don't mind but i felt inspire to illustrate this story :D (unemployment for you) please don't laugh i have not drawn anything for about 2 years and i'm not sure i captured the war correspondence atmosphere but i do hope i have got the right shade of ginger for Monty

We have a kitten v foal war at the moment where I am working. It is highly amusing (now) however it started very tragically!

We USED to have two kittens, the first one was turned into a pancake by the foal who felt she should spring on him (so just be careful, if a 6 week foal can do this I dread to think what mr Knobberts can do!) after a tearful few days we let kitten 2 back onto the yard.

She is a lot more sensible (and FAR better watched) and when the foal is playing out the kitten walks about her stable as if she is trying to find weaknesses/ place traps in order to avenge her brothers death.

She also likes to scare the foal by popping up really close to her when foalie isn't expecting it so foalie gets scared.

They have also had a couple of staring matches and at the moment it is a stalemate as they take it in turns to run away from the other.

Mama horse doesn't care that her baby is being terrorised by a 3 month old kitten... she has more important things to worry about, like filling her face with as much hay as she physically can.

Seems to me this is a worldwide war... should we do something about it??
