I have noticed that Marnie has been knocking her hind feet together when being ridden. She isn't very fit which I think is part of the problems, and also she is quite bow legged behind which doesn't help! She has sheared her feathers and I am worried that she is going to damage her coronet band. I am struggling to get boots to fit to help prevent this and wondered if anyone had any ideas - I have put photos below to help try and describe the issues! She has short pasterns, quite a lot of bone and a lot of feather - I don't really want to trim this as I can't get clippers near her and if I do it with scissors, she ends up looking like rats have been chewing her! I have tried a sausage boot on her and it wouldn't go anywhere near round her leg!

Thanks for any help - sorry this got a bit long!

what about bandages to cover the legs that way they fit i know its a pain but its got to be better the cutting the feathers

I borrowed a sausage boot, and couldn't get it to go anywhere near round her leg! Too much feather and bone!

Any ideas what to suggest to him? My farrier is fine shoeing 'normal' horses, but doesn't suggest any changes to solve issues that may occur. I haven't really got a clue where to start, feet are one thing I have never really got to grips with.

I had the same problem with my cob and sausage boots so I bought an extra one and cut a piece off it then threaded the extra bit onto the other one with strong elastic and sewed the ends together, the sewed bit popped inside the extended boot which was much easier to put on and worked great.

no, sorry, i'm not a farrier...ring around a ask if they re remedial farriers....

Thanks - wasn't sure if you had dealt with similar! Think I will phone my vet, they have a remedial farrier working from the practice so it is probably worth getting their opinion.

Hi
You need to correct the horses stance through trimming. The horse is standing base narrow resulting in looking 'bow legged' and moving close behind (maybe also foot not laterally balanced correctly?) You should ask your farrier to correct this - he should know how! Prob a good idea to get your vet take a look if they are knowledgable on feet?
My barefoot trimmer and vet have improved my horse no end who is severely base narrow.
