Called my EDT this morning to book Murphy in, and when he asked me to confirm the yard address he was really surprised that I know the yard's postcode.

I make a point of knowing my yard's postcode, for a very good reason. A while ago, when I was at a different yard, someone came off a horse while she was riding in the field next to the yard. I got to her first, and called the ambulance, knowing they'd probably have to send the air ambulance out.

The 999 operator asked me for the postcode, and I didn't know it. It then took a little while for them to pinpoint exactly where I was (the yard is off a main road through a village - so not in the middle of nowhere).

Had I known the postcode, they would have been able to get my location instantly. So, please try to memorise your yard's postcode, and those of you who organise events/shows please make sure all your officials know the postcode (I'm sure you all probably do this anyway!).

Knowing your OS grid isn't a bad plan either if you are a little remote. We used to hack in a large forest, and I knew the grids for our hacking route, just in case. Luckily I never needed to call an ambulance into the forest, but I know people who did and it took a long time to find them. Might be an idea for those who hunt as well?

If you go to www.streetmap.co.uk, locate your yard and use 'move arrow' to pinpoint the yard. If you look underneath the map you'll see: "

Map key | Location is at 000000,000000 | Click here to convert coordinates. | Click here to toggle map adverts"

Click 'Click here to convert coordinates' and you'll get the grid co-ordinates and the nearest post code.

Hope this helps.

I know the pub name. Everyone knows that, including the ambulance crew, lol! Good reminder, though. I'll look up the pub postcode, as that's nearest!

Mine doesn't have one, it's just a field with stables on a gated lane that you need a key for!

Mine are the same, they're in a field which is along a byway, so not actually a real road. I now have the OS coordinates in my mobile

Heard a story a while ago about an old man who died as the ambulance people couldn't find his address on their satNav, so didn't get to him for 2 hours, by then it was too late. The silly thing is that he was in the middle of a town, the address just didn't register!

Pop to the library and have a look at the OS map, and get a 6 or 8 digit grid reference. If you don't know how to read it, make a photocopy, and ask someone who has done Duke of Edinburgh, ex military, etc to tell you (or I bet the librarian may know!) Don't post it here tho, you don't want to publicise where you are!

When I came off last August, I was lying in the middle of what is known to locals as 'The big field' and this is what was what my fellow rider was saying down the phone to the emergency service operator. It took them nearly 2 hours to find me(which I only just found out...I was unconscious for longer than I realised

). My OH couldnt find me either. I knew it was called Berkhamsted Common but I was totally incoherent.

I make a point to have all the local area details on me now!

Just had a thought along knowing postal codes. Might be an idea to get one of those key fobs write details on it or dog tag and get it engraved and put it on the saddle with details like postal code and a contact number should you and horse becomed parted. Might even put one on my jacket in case I am not a fit state to answer questions!

On the back of your mobile phone is a good place, as well as your ICE numbers, your address, any medical information needed (eg my friend had latex allergy on hers) as paramedics do look at this.

I make a point of making sure daughter knows where we are when we're hacking out, and that she has the numbers of relevant people on her phone. I asked her the other week what she would do if I were to come a cropper: we talked through who and what order, etc.; also showed her the routes on an OS map.
