If well maintained the cords are split to the skin and the dog is comfortable. Unmaintained they can be a nightmare but no less comfortable than the majority of poodle cross coats.

They're an old breed with a defined purpose in a particular region.
As above, and as with any heavy coated breed, if you maintain it, it shouldn't be a problem.
