I am trying to train my 8 month old sprocker to be left at home. I have discovered she loves her kong if i pack it with a variety of things especially chopped chicken! I am trying to leave the house for a few minutes regularly and just wondered how often i can give her the kong and any other things i can put in it?
Obviously i have cut her meals down in size while she is doing all this training, but any advice greatfully received..

if you feed dry food soak some in water until it goes mushy and then freeze it, keeps them occupied for hours licking it out. You can give this every day just dont give him as much for dinner.

Thanks, the only thing is that she doesnt seem too interested in it with just her dried food in it, thats why i tried adding a bit of chicken.
She has to have something interesting otherwise she will just concentrate on the fact i have left her and start barking and yowling

I had heard freezing it is a good idea but obviously i cant freeze it with chicken in it cos it wont do her any good eating frozen chicken.

why not do a combo bit and soak the food then put chicken in it!
Maybe not freeze it! although I dont think putting it in the fridge or something similar would do it any harm...........

Or how about putting cheese in it and freeze it! frozen cheese wont do any harm!!!

Yes you can freeze cream cheese but it dosent thaw out very well which would probable be better if it is still slightly frozen as it would be harder for dog to get it out.And the same for pate.

I have a really busy tuesday so I have to leave them for about 4 hours in the morning then I come home and walk them and then the same in the afternoon. They get a kong each in the morning and 1 each in the afternoon as well. Mine seem to love anything I put in it. Their favorites seem to be cheese spread on toast stuffed straight in with ham and sausage layered in between and a cheese layer over the top to get them interested in it (i try to pack mine really tight otherwise they've eaten it in about 5 minutes!). They also like banana and yogurt mash with chopped apples either freshly made of frozen.

Very thick q here... My rottie has a kong stuff a ball & I put kong biscuits in it... but he doesn't seem able to get them out. His only technique is to drop it downstairs then go carefully after it to see if any bits have broken off & come out.

How would he get anything else out of it? Wouldn't it stay inside for ages & go all smelly? Or have I got the wrong sort of kong? Do I need the one that looks like a... how to describe it... butt plug????

i have a butt plug one!!! And you put things like soft food like soaked dinner etc in it. Their tongues EASILY fit all the way in! they are often rank inside if they get distracted and forget about it, but doubt a rottie will!!!
They are great! and the soaked food etc like cream cheese etc as stated above can be frozen which makes it last even longer! biscuits require the kong to be thrown etc (mine just lobs it round the room with biscuits in) whereas soft food, especially frozen, they can settle down and just lick and chew it to their hearts content!!

They are GREAT!

Mia is far to clever for her own good.... she's only 15 weeks old !! I stuffed chicken into her Kong and packed it in really tightly. She discovered she can get it out if she tosses the kong in the air really high because when it hits the floor the chicken boings out !! TOO CLEVER !!!
