Hi

Just wanted to know if anyone had experience of blood salts?

I put my usually laid back thoroughbred on blood salts in March when he went through a very lethargic couple of weeks when his coat was changing. I noticed an almost immediate improvement and 'spark' but he also became more spooky than usual when he very rarely would notice anything.

We have kept him on them and he looks fantastic and had been going well but the spookiness is still there and been getting worse as spring goes on. He just seems on very high alert all the time and very jumpy and he wasn't like this last year and the only thing that had changed is the blood salts.

I didn't think they would make him sharp but wondered if anyone else had an experience of them making their horse spooky and sharp? He is still working well but takes a while to settle and is very edgy in the arena that he knows very well. Also he has become a little nappy when he spooks.

He may just be testing me as I've only had him 8 months but thought I'd see if the salts could be a factor as he has been perfect in every other way until now.

Thanks for reading

I haven't used Kossolian for years, but remember it making one of mine a bit nutty! It's got B12 in it, which we used to inject the event horses with to give them a bit of extra oomph! I reckon that's your culprit!

You could always try using Brewers yeast with the Kossolian to see if that helps. It's not for nothing that many trainers use it as a pick me up especially at both ends of the seasons.

Sometimes, like with poorly children, you don't realize how under the weather they were until they're feeling (and showing it!) so much better and what you have now is his 'normal' mode. The BY is sometimes a very good calmer as it settles the stomach and it is used as the base for Pink Powder. You could also try natural yoghurt, that sometimes has the same results and the beauty of both of them is they don't cost a fortune.
