Kr*p Kellsall, failed eventer seeks new career

I moved to eventing a few years ago and the horse I had at the time had all the ability in the world to do it. I used to jump 1.25 classes with him but lost my nerve so was introduced to eventing! He was good at first, coming in the top 10 at his first two events, however he then switched off. would dump me in the SJ or just not set off out the start box and i'd end up pulling up and R, however I decided to take him BS one weekend and he was placed in both classes! took him eventing and we'd do badly. In the end I made the decision to sell him. I had owned him for 7 years and was gutted. However he has recently won a puissance at 1.5 with hi new owner and is winning classes at BS shows. I guess he only ever wanted to show jump.

I think making the decision is hard but as others have said, its an expensive hobby to keep trying a horse that just doesn't want to do it. The horse I have now is worlds apart, his ability is not as good but his attitude makes up for it and I love him to bits and really enjoy XC now.

Great picture of him though!

I share a 16 year old ex eventer. He evented up to IA and could have gone higher, but hated his dressage and always felt a bit backward for the first couple of fences XC. I never evented him but apparently even when he did PN and N 3 yrs ago he was like this. He now hunts and loves it! he is in his element! He's taken a year to chill out, but he's one of the most awesome horses i have hunted.

Srimp, sorry cant see your pics at work will look tonight, thanks for your comments - we dont ahve any problems schooling :(

Amage, We've stopped going downhill once in the open away from any jumps!!, and on the flat twice at a jump one small log, and at Kelsall at a feeder type fence and also on the flat in between jumps. In hindsight all setting off away on course or if the course turned away from lorry park/collecting rings etc.

but above all, just remember that this is supposed to be your relaxation and hobby. If it it isn't working and you aren't enjoying it, then I honestly don't see the point of carrying on!.

I finally ended up with a mare who not only had the t'shirt, she had written the book. Took 6 months to get her back into full time work, and she took me upto Novice .. in 18 months. Double clear was the only acceptable outcome with her. So, same amount of time, similiar money to pay for the horses, same costs and effort put into it BUT.. enjoyment level - off the scale.

my horse must do the job I want him to do and safely or he will be sold on. eventing is EXPENSIVE!!, horribly horribly so. I know - you get 3 for the price of 1 fee but to bring a horse on to have any capability is a big task. I have one semi retired horse (old event mare) who will live out her days with me so not a fan of selling on but you must do what ultimately will make you happy and looking forward to what you want to do and enjoy the most.

Yes to all this really, pretty much sums up how I'm feeling deep down.

We've no problems when we school and i've simulated a course situation, no issues with one particular jump, its not all downhill or up hill, I really cant see myself re schooling again and again to only hit the problem at events, when he can repeatedly learn to nap and get to walk home. :(.

yes sure we can do pairs classes and low key events where we can stop then carry on but how will that help we move up a level again?

Its only 5-6 mins, Back at the box soon enough, do your bit lad!

Sounds so much like mine! Gets bored in dressage and always 'so much potential' put at the bottom, half hearted clear sj and the takes the mess xc! We did an ode at begining of the month which was 90cm, half way into first xc jump and stopped dead. 10 minutes later, after using legs, whip, voice, taking him away and then back towards, he suddenly trots down the hill, pops the log and gallops to the next one! 6 jumps later repeats this again!! So frustrating as have schooled over 1.10 and above xc and its effortless for him! However, took him to bsja and had clears and he enjoyed himself! Obviously that's his thing! :)

Is this you digger2? Im going by your xc colours in the other pic! I was fence judging at the water and took a few photos when I could:
