Hi all,

Gonna be a bit of a long one but I'll keep it as short as I can. My dad's horse has quite a habit of giving him flying lessons and I'm really starting to feel sorry for him.

We went to try him and he was brilliant with Dad, passed 5 stage vetting and was brilliantly behaved for months after we had him, and it brilliantly behaved most of the time. The first flying lesson my dad was giving was when dad was re-mounting out on a hack, having to get off to open one of the many horrible gates around here, which are okay on a 14.1, not so easy on a 17hh. Horse shot forward as dad was swinging his leg over and landed just behind the saddle. And not surprisingly he was launched up into the tree above and came back down through the branches eating dirt on landing. Horse hot stepped it through the town on his own to the local garden centre where he let himself into a field to graze. We thought we'd let that one go, not many horses would be happy about somebody thudding down onto there loins. Then he puts in another buck when a dog is yapping at his legs, again launching dad, and again we'd thought we'd let that one go.

Then he started doing it in the school when dad got on within the first 10-15 minutes, or as soon as his bum hit the saddle. They aren't little bucks I can assure you. Got saddle checked after the first 3 bucks, and he needed a wider gullet, seemed fine for a while then he started again. Got saddle checked again, nope still a nice fit.

What does it sound like to you? Don't like throwing words around like kissing spines, but we'd like to cover every possibility. Back lady coming out soon, she's been on holiday typically! Haha.

Any advice welcomed! Thanks for reading if you got that far, ask anymore questions you like too.

Might also be a point to add that he stands funny with his back legs, one slightly faces inward when resting. It's got better the more muscle he's put on but he still does it. Oh and he used to drive in Ireland!

Sorry for such an epicly long post! Lol

:)

My baby has started rodeo-ing every time I sit on him after 6 months of being an angel, and he can't canter on the right lead leg with his saddle on when lunged- think he slipped over in the field and pulled a muscle of some sort in his back- I have also booked someone to come and have a look at his back (saddle was checked not that long ago and he's the same with the roller on). Wishing you luck, I know a few horses who've had a nasty fall in the field which has caused back problems- usually sorted out quite quickly, fingers crossed :)

Well, it could any one of the things you have suggested. If you have a back lady coming to check him that would be my first step (also ask her to check his saddle). If you are not getting a result from that, then you should get an experienced equine vet to come out and assess him. Kissing spine can ONLY be detected from X-ray, not external palpation

Good luck!

Thanks both for taking the time to reply! :) He was on box rest for a bit with a foot abcess so could of tweaked it hooning around after that. But it's been more of a common thing for him. I honestly don't think it's nastiness, it's definitely pain from somewhere in the back.

Sorry no advice, but my horse is doing this too.
He first did it out on a hack, he put his head down when standing on grass, i thought he was trying to graze so i pulled his head up, and he went mad, not just typical bucking. My friends told me to get straight back on, which i did, but the moment my backside touched saddle he was off again,

Didnt ride for a few weeks until i got his saddle sorted and checked, first time riding him again he got me off when i asked for trot. Complete confidence meltdown for me, so got someone to lunge him for me, but they were naughty and tried him with a rider on, which aparantly went well until canter, where he stopped dead so the rider went flying over his head. I'm now at a loss who to call first, back person (again, a different one), vet, saddle person (again)!!!!
