KWPN passport trouble for my neglected horse

heya,
in august i bought a severly neglected horse by the name of Salvados. Now that he is recovering well I decided to investigate his past after discovering his previous owner lost his passport.
It turns out Salvados is a KWPN registered show jumper whos career mysteriously ended in 2004 when he was 5 years old. I am now trying to apply for a passport for him as it is illegal for him not to have one. What do I need to do to get him a new passport? I have no idea as I have never owned a horse before even though I have been around horses most of my life.

For a start get him scanned to see if he is already chipped. If he is you should be able to trace him via the chip info - your vet will have a scanner. I have a feeling though that the KWPN do not issue replacement passports.
If you do need to start from scratch Petplan,Farmkey & the Veteran Horse Society are amongst many who are cheaper than Wetherbys. It is illegal for a horse to have more than one passport, but you may have no option if all efforts at tracing him draw a blank. Contact your local DEFRA office for advice if you're unsure, but I suspect if he's not chipped they'll tell you to go ahead & get a basic ID document for him from any PIO.
 
He most likely is already microchipped so your most logical answer is to get a replacement passport from them I will find the link to their website .However they may require some tail hair to DNA test to ake sure it is the same horse.I am afraid a replacement passport will be 166 euros/£150

I think all you need is microchip number and pictures from the front, both sides and the back.
Send them a email and I am sure they will send you all the info they need.
 
If you know who his original passport was with contact them to apply for a duplicate. If you don't know then you can apply to any Passport Issuing Organisation to apply for a replacement. This is permissable if the organisation is satisfied the original has been lost or stolen. Horses with such 'duplicate' passports must be signed out of the food chain as their history regarding drug administration is unknown.
 
Second this - please contact KWPN. They are really helpful - they will want to DNA test as Popdosh says and I know it will be more expensive this way - but wouldn't it be nice to have his proper passport and they may even be able to help you with who bred him. Sounds an interesting story - let us know if you manage to find out his past.....
 
I have just been in contact with KWPN and they are very helpful, it would be 176 Euros for a replacement passport, the forms to complete are on the KWPN website

thanks very much for all the help, he is microchipped and I have his A4 registered paper that apparently comes with the passport. Would I need to hand this back with the application form? and also would I have to send the money for the passport in a cheque in the envelope or pay online or something? Cause im not sure exactley how much would be needed as they have him on record cause I recently asked them about him, so would a DNA test be required? finally does anyone know how much it would be for a vet to fill out the application form? cause im only a student its gunna take me a while to save up the money on ema :) arrr its soo confusing lol XD moral of the story ano hes lovely and soo worth the hassle, but buying a neglected horse is even sooo much more work lol! but i loove him anyways XD xxx

if thats the case I dont mind at all XD I dont agree with selling horses for food anyway :) but thanks for the help ill see what the KWPN say first

I lost my KWPN gelding' passport in December and have had to apply for a duplicate. If you go onto their website you need to email them and just explain the situation then they email you a form explaining all you need to do. I had to ends of some mane for DNA sampling, and pics of each side of the hwole horse, one of each leg and of the whole face. Also you need a vet to check passport number and record markings and whorls etc on the form. Then you send it off and they issue a duplicate. It will cost about 250 though because you have to become a member for them to do it which is about 100 quid and then its 150 ish for the passport :-(. I wasn't a happy chicken but it's all sorted now.
