A friend of mine has decided to put her mare into foal this summer and is contemplating using hemmingway or flemmingh as a stallion for her mare. She's after temperament rather than anything else as her mare has nice confirmation but a foula temper but with the right stallion should produce a nice foal.

To be honest I'll believe it when I see it and it's likely to be next year at the rate she's going with her breeding plans, but has anyone any experience of their offspring and what are they like?
 
Not sure i would use Flemmingh if you are after temperament improvement. Good movement improver the experience i've had they are not always the best in the brain.
 
I thought Flemmingh was known as agood influence for temperament? But I dont know much about Dutch horses so I might be mistaken. Stolensilver is a good one to ask having used Flemmingh.

Is your friend not concerned that the mare's foul temper will be inherited by the foal, as unless she is using embryo transfer, the foal will learn a lot of mannerisms from the mare
 
Hemmingway is a good stallion and as he is based in the UK is very accessible. Scotland AI Services and Ben are excellent to work with, so would highly recommend them. We have a Hemmingway filly and she is very easy to work with, however our mare is exceptional with a good temperament also.

Flemmingh would only be available by frozen semen, so it depends on which route you wish to go. I have seen some excellent horses by Flemmingh but would not necessarily use him on a mare that already has a hot temperament.
 
Kannan is the stallion best known for super temperament, he's more successful in international competition and a mote proven stallion based on production. You also get guaranteed scope and great movement.

Not meaning to be contaversial but is it wise for her to breed from a mare with a foul temper, are they looking to keep the foal or sell? I've always been told a foal is roughly 60% the mare, with the foal/youngstock market being what it is currently is it wise to breed from a mare that could pass on her temper to the foal?????????

If I'm wrong and shouted down then sorry just thought I'd mention it!!!! Otherwise I'd say make sure they use a stallion that definately stamps his stock and has a very ameanable attitude! I wouldn't advise proset/flemmingh necessarily from what you've said as they can be quite querky, worst case senario you may end up with quirky AND bad tempered foal!!!! Best case senerio you get good action and ability!!!!!!

Seeing as this is a post about KWPN stallions I am just wondering how Kannan could be a potential stallion for this breeder as, as far as I am aware, whilst he is an undeniably fantastic stallion, he is approved by almost all stud books BUT KWPN....a fact I have often wondered about....
 
Yes but as far as I am aware they have not approved registry of foals by Kannan.....don't get me wrong....I love the stallion....just wonder why this is...
 
As Sacha says I've used Flemmingh after hearing what great temperaments he passed onto his stock and was very pleased with the foal. They have a wonderful work ethic and great trainability as well as being good movers. He has a reputation for producing amateur friendly dressage horses and from my experience I'd say that's right. They aren't quiet but then quiet won't get you far in dressage but they are on side which is what you want.
 
I don't think Kannan was ever presented to the KWPN, so a fairly simple answer. He is KWPN by birth, but then approved BWP because whoever owned him at the time was in Belgium. Then his French owners had him approved Selle Francais, but I don't think they are big stallion owners and didn't really push him for breeding, so probably weren't that fussed about getting him approved elsewhere. But as I said on another thread, xrays have been taken for him to go through the KWPN approval, so we'll all have to wait and see.
 
Thanks for all the responses. For what it's worth I think she's crazy to be breeding from this mare, but she was an expensive horse that hasn't worked out, but she won't sell her either so I think it's kind of the last straw. I'll pass on your recommendations and see what she says.
 
I think you are spot on, the mare is the biggest influence. In the current market why even chance it. It has not worked out with the mare, so lets breed from her, spend more then will ever be recouperated if the offspring did have to be sold in the future. Yes that makes real sense. Hopefully though they have checked the mares breeding & ruled out the temperment running through the family & it being more a case of bad nurture.
 
One question regarding the KWPN approval....as Nomis pointed out in the other thread....why has he had x rays done now when the next KWPN approvals are not till February??
 
The KWPN can decide to recognize a stallion who has an outstanding performance record. No gradings are neccesary then.
The time of taking pictures is not really interesting any way because you have to send them to the KWPN for inspection and if they are approved the stallion owner receives a certifcate like the PROK certificat for mares and that certificat is valid for the grading, even if you go 10 yrs later.
 
Thanks for that Mark..interesting to know. Why though would the KWPN not automatically approve Kannan as he is an International competitor and international sire???
