Someone has said I should use KY jelly instead of the Vetalintex Hydrogel I am using at the mo, to keep a leg wound moist whilst healing. Is this true? The wound is not infected and I am on my last tube of the V. Hydrogel and don't know whether to order more or buy some KY instead?

I don't know the answer to that one, but you may get some funny looks if buying KY in any quantity!

I'll be sure to buy a couple of packets of condoms at the same time

So, the person was right who told me this, then!? I can use the KY instead of buying more veterinary hydrogel?? Would certainly work out cheaper and easier to obtain.

Yep, its basically a water based gel and quite safe. When in theatre and clipping out round wounds tec, we always but ky in so that fur didn't get into the wound.

KY is a lubricant and Ventalintex Hydrogel is formulated to promote healing, as well as keeping the wound moist ?

KY does contain an sodium hydroxide as an antiseptic ingredient, but it is not specifically designed as a wound treatment gel.

.... but if the KY Jelly keeps the wound moist whilst healing, wouldn't it work as well as the hydrogel?

I've found this:

It has been demonstrated that KY Jelly works as a hydrogel (Martin, 1996) and therefore can debride and deslough wounds.

If you are going to take that route wouldn't it be easier to buy the verterinary 'lube' that you can get in vast containers for very little cost -assuming the ingredients are the same.

(no I don't have odd habits but had some on standby for foaling)
