The vet has asked for Prince to begin doing some pole exercises. So today i put out 4 poles, knowing he could walk over 1 and 2, and proceeded to walk with him in hand towards them. The reaction he gave could only be described as 'nope syndrome'.

Q. Can you walk over them?
A. Nope.
Q. What about beside them?
A. Nope, don't ask me again.
Q. What if i move one away?
A. NOPENOPENOPENOPE (que bucking, kicking, farting and general wide eyed-ness.

Fine. But seeing as i'd taken the time to set up raised and flat poles, i decided that Kyra could do them, if not to show Prince they wouldn't kill him, then to get some exercise and work on collection on the lunge. Kyra who's done trotting poles for years, Kyra who knows what to do when faced with them and Kyra who has just watched the whole nope episode.

Ahh, back to square one.

Great picture but those poles do look scary raised with tyres like that (& probably unsafe to use tyres in case your horse puts a foot in the middle!!!)

Are they used to doing poles?

you should really start with one and build up or at least three at double spacing so that they aren't inclined to jump them all in one go...

Hello, tyres are diddy 13inch and the poles are extremely long, you can tell because the camcorder was quite high, in the middle track they were only the pole width high. But i can see it looks like the track in the middle is small and the poles high. Shes very very well used to them, she did the flat poles on both reins then these on both reins, then decided that they were to be jumped on the last go.

Prince however may not be accustomed to poles, but he had the flat jumping ones, so it may have been the colours. He has been walking over 1 and 2 poles for the last week, only once in each direction then he is turned out. Vet said no amount of food is going to sort his 'shark finn' topline out.

And to the pole-phobic horse lovers, heres the latest picture of him trying out his stable rug. I've recently backed up and cleared my phone but il take some conformational type photos tonight for comparing, as its now nearly been a month (:

And to prove she can do it, if alittle exaggerated.
