In the first class of the day Michael Whitaker, the only British starter, just missed out on the money, coming 11th on Portofino with just a single time fault.

He then made amends in the second class though...destroying a strong field on Quidame des Hayettes to win by almost 3 seconds

Nick Skelton and Arko picked up 9th place while Will Funnell had a pole on Billy Birr and Mark Armstrong had two down on Sefana.

The Nations Cup is next and starts at 3pm (CET)...2pm (BST).

Have you noticed, over the years we do brilliant in speed classes and small GP's and then when it comes to the large GP's we don't seem to do as well

At the moment we seem to be lacking a few top horses capable of doing the big classes consistantly and I fear we may struggle a bit in the NC's unless some of the horses come out after the winter break and do well.

It looks like your fears are coming to light in the NC

After 3 have jumped we're equal last and miles behind Germany who are on 0.

Would have thought that Arko, Portofino and Peppermill (not in La Baule) would be good enough to compete with the best, but we lack strength in depth

OOOOPS (I should have whispered it, never mind we will win Eurovision)

Not surprised about Arko not jumping although suprised he was pushed against the clock. Mind you Nick is a determined rider and Portofino has done a lot indoors so perhaps Michael is taking it slowly and of there is the GP to go for

, but I feel we may rely on these two quite a bit as they have the experience and ability.

We have the riders but again Michael was the only one who qualified for the world cup which I think is a pointer to the level of horses we have competing and doing well at top level consistantly. Good luck to our teams throughout the year.

I thought Tim Stockdale may have been picked as he had some good results with Corlato over winter once she had come back from injury.
