Lab attacks kid

'She saw us and smiled so we walked over to her.'

Since when does smiling mean 'please come over and fuss my dog'? I smile at people but I don't want them to come over or for them or their children to fuss/pet my dog.

My friends "family Gold Retriever" bit my arm badly last year when I was only holding his collar. Apparently he snarls at them at home if he gets to the cat food and they try and pull him off. I asked what they did about it and was told nothing. Now that is a dog I would not trust around children and yet they have an 8 yr old in the house who has friends over etc and I'm sure are allowed to "play with him" unsupervised".... hmmm.....

My best friend had a similar dog, family golden retriever, bought up in a family with two children. My sister was patting it one day (sister also bought up around animals and would never do anything to hurt one) and went for her, removed a large chunk of her cheek and she needed 6 operations, 3 skin grafts, was in hospital for months and didn’t return to school for a year.

Frenchay Hospital, one of the leading plastic surgery centres in the country advised my parents that it was one of the most common breeds of dog for attacks, especially on children.

Sadly this could have all been prevented if we’d have told our parents when he went for one of our friends, we told them the graze on his face was from falling off a bike. That attack too was unprovoked.

To me labs and retrievers are working dogs and should at the least be trained as such, even if kept as pets you need to instil discipline and manners in them.

sorry T-bag told me and I can't believe he wrote coat instead of goat, this thread would of been getting weird with coats in it!!

Its always awful when a dog bites a child - I have problems with my pup when he is with young children - he loves to pplay and knows that the kids will play too but he does have very sharp teeth - he's six months old. Maybe the dog thought he was going to play and got boistrous.

In NZ we've just had two young children badly hurt by staffy & staffy pitbull crosses. Both dogs were PTS immediately.

That's it though isn't it? People get these docile lazy breeds and then don't give them any training at all....

'It wasn't a pitbull or a Staffordshire bull terrier that you would think would be dangerous.'
^^ what a stupid thing to say!! Doesn't matter what the breed is, you should always check before stroking it. Staffies are known as the nanny dog, it's the owner never the dog. Some people cross the road when they see me and my rottie out, and others say 'do you mind if i fuss him?' and proceed to do so while he laps up the attention and offers kisses to them.
Some people are so small minded.
rant over :p
