Lab constantly sniffing over JRT

Just wondered what you thought.

Our lab is constantly sniffing over our JRT, by that i mean sniffing after where he has been, in his bed, following him around and sniffing him etc. Some times he is better, other times he is worse.

Is there anything we can do with this? The lab is now 4 and has not been neutered (mainly becase we have wondered if we may breed from him at some point as he is such a lovely dog and lovely type. Would neutering help with this or is he now too old?

Just after some general advice please. We clearly are quite firm, with him but it doesnt seem to help.
 
The jrt isn't ill,is he? I've seen dogs do this when others are poorly-say if they have a UTI,they sometimes leak a bit of wee and it obv smells different/not his usual smell and others can pick up. When our GSP was ill,our other one started to sniff him a lot more-mouth,bottom,willy etc(anywhere where there was fluids!) . If lab has always done it tho (as opposed to just recently) must just be the lab! ;)
 
Sorry should have said he's a dog, neutered although I don't think he is helping the situation as he is known to occasionally try and 'hump' things so whether that stirs the lab up. Although he doesn't just sniff after him after he has been going that. It's just so annoying and lab starts dribbling everywhere.
 
I suspect that the sniffing behaviour has something to do with your Lab being intrigued by your neutered JRT's smell.


There was someone on HHO, some years ago, who wrote something about that since her dog, if I remember correctly it was an English Springer Spaniel or similar, had been neutered, she could not leave him alone with entire male dogs, because the other dogs would act as if he was a she...
So it seems as if it can happen that neutering change something in how a dog smell (doesn't have to, but possible).

Although your neutered JRT hump things, it doesn't have to be caused by him still feeling "like a man", because humping behaviour can have other causes than the sexual one (dominance for example), but even if he does it because he still believes that he is entire, that doesn't mean that other dogs can't perceive a difference in his smell.


I will now have to confess to having a strange habit , because occasionally I sniff at my bitches paws. My bitches doesn't usually smell dog, but they can sometimes have a faint special, individual dog scent on/around their paws (that I think smells wonderful). However it comes and goes, some periods I can't detect any scent and some periods even my nose can detect this faint scent, and if I can detect a difference between my three bitches scent - think how much they must be able to detect with their noses!

To me, this also proves that the amount of scent that they send out can fluctuate, thereby possibly explaining why your Lab sometimes is more and sometimes less interested in sniffing your JRT.


Oh, I fear that this post makes me sound like a complete nutter, but anyhow, I have no idea if it would help or not to also neuter your Lab, I would possibly consider trying to bath the JRT, his bedding etc., to try and neutralise/disguise his own personal dog smell and see if that makes any difference, but since they have so much better noses than us, I'm not sure that it would work.

Maybe he's just horny then! At xmas,my sister's (entire)dog was 'wibbling' his jaw and lips and dribbling,after sniffing where our elderly bitch had been laying on the dogbed...it definitely,er,excited him... ;)
 
Thank you both, beds etc are regularly washed, our lab has such a nose on him runs around outside like a blood hound haha!!
