My 3yo yellow lab Kensa has decided to go from a very thick rough coarse coat ... as she has always had ... including all summer .... to the total opposite now we have hit the peak of the shooting season!! Her coat has completely dropped out, almost like she's had a grade 1 all over her body!!

I've checked her over for any little critters ~ nothing... she's not scratching or digging at all .... but is quite obviously damn cold when we're out picking up!!

Anyone ever had this?! Or is she just proving me right once again ... she's a total confused nutter and thinks its summer ?!!

thankyou

Hmm - in my experience I have noticed that yellows do tend to moult more than blacks - all year round infact!

It's so warm, muggy and wet at the moment I don't think animals (or plants) know if they are coming or going.

Do your dogs live out?

I am surprised she is feeling the cold though, especially picking up. When we stop for soup/lunch mine go into the dog cage in the back of the car with the boot left open, if they are particularly wet - ie done retrieves from the river, I put a towelling rug on them so that they are dry when we get home and then they can come in.

Have you got a rug or a fleece to put on her?

she has towelling rugs on her at lunch time and then again at the end of the day until they are dropped back to the kennels.

The kennels are in an open fronted barn. She's always been hairy and malts but never ever like this looks terrible!!

she's still got her fluffy neck and then from shoulders back its very short and flat with the odd remaining wispy hair lol

all the dogs are up to date with wormers and flea treatment, someone suggested a bird mite??

Maybe i'll give the vet a ring on Monday and see if the flea treatment would cover this? I dont think it does tho ...

She's not necessarily cold when out working, just when hanging around between drives after being in the river she shakes like mad!!

Never used to when she had a 'full head of hair' so to speak!

Bless her she always has to be different !!!

I wouldn't worry too much about the shaking - as obviously its the body's natural way to warm her up and I expect you are on the go again in a short time.

I don't know about the loss of coat, especially if it is unusual for her and at the age of three. Personally I blame everything on the weather!!

ok ... i'll blame the weather ... for now at lease!! Have to go to the vets next week anyway to get Fern's stitches out (nutty spaniel and barbed wire ... say no more) so i will maybe mention in then and see what they say. I'm a bit overprotective of my girly!!

Hows the shooting season going up your way??

This season has been great!! Its the first time we have done partridge so dogs have been working since early Sept and only about 10 days left - how lovely, means I can get lots of hunting in!!!

I have been so pleased with my dogs but most particularly with my spaniel. I have never been able to teach him to deliver to hand but this season he has done it about 80% of the time - I am so chuffed!

Unfortunately he learned very early on that if he brings me a runner, drops it in front of me, it will run off and he can go after it again - arghhh - a catch 22 situation! You can't scold them for bringing it back, or for catching it again but its a nightmare to try and persuade him to give it to me in the first place!! Slowly we are getting there!

God yes!! My girl malted for about a month before she finally stopped last week. It was getting to the point where you couldn't tell where she stopped and I started!

She also got this weird bald patch on both sides of her neck for about 2 weeks - really strange, but the hair has all grown back now. Anyone know what that was?
