As a child my heart was moved by glorious, heart wrenching Lad and his exlpoits. This book formulated a lot of my ideals in a dog and also in dog ownership. The writing is beautiful and often very moving. A true dog person's book.

An exerpt:

"Lad was an eighty-pound collie, thoroughbred in
spirit as well as in blood. He had the benign dig-
nity that was a heritage from endless generations
of high-strain ancestors. He had, too, the gay
courage of a d'Artagnan, and an uncanny wisdom.
Also who could doubt it, after a look into his
mournful brown eyes he had a Soul.

His shaggy coat, set off by the snowy ruff and
chest, was like orange-flecked mahogany. His ab-
surdly tiny forepaws in which he took inordinate
pride were silver white. "

Book monster that I am, I shall keep an eye out for that :D

If you're looking for something new to read yourself I can thoroughly recommend 'Dog Boy' by Eva Hornung. The book follows Romochka, a four year old boy who starts a new life living with a family of stray dogs after he is abandonned in Moscow. It can be fairly unforgiving in places, the author has quite a direct style that leaves no room for romanticising- in this context it helps to make the story all the more effective. However, it is one of those that's hard to put down, and that stays with you and makes you think. The ending is quite distressing (I found it to be, anyway) and rather points the finger at the failings of our own species :o Although it is justified with it's realism... the outcome of the book is quite easily imaginable.

Amazon linky for reviews etc, to save you from more of my ramblings :p

Let me know what you think of it :) I've put Lad on my list for 'next time I've been drinking long enough to forget I really have to budget and thus go mental on amazon, but purchase at least one vaguely academic text in order to justify the huge package of reading-goodness arriving in it's exciting cardboard box'.........

....... which could happen at any time, on any evening :p
