Just been sent a link to a video of the fall - horrific. Looks like poor Frodo put in an extra stride and was just too close at speed. A VERY fast rotational fall. I don't think anyone can ever design a hat and body armour that would protect any rider from injuries in a fall like this.

You can really see the difference in eventing v racing rotational falls how the fixed fence literally stops the horse in mid air. flipping the rider straight down into the ground and gravity takes over to bring the animal right down on top of them.

Not nice at all. Rotational falls usually happen in slow motion but this one seemed to be very quick

Can see why Laine suffered horrendous jaw injuries, frankly she is very lucky that she did not snap her neck. It was a very fast faal but her approach was not over fast.
Wishing her a speedy reovery.
 
very nasty fall she came in too fast and should have checked the horse a few strides before the fence...hope she has a speedy recovery.....

Froddo Baggins was PTS; the other horse broke its shoulder and was also PTS

At first glance I would have to agree...but having watched it a couple of times i'm not sure the video is playing in real time. It has that 'feel' of something playing back a bit quicker

Bottom line though must be that if you're going fast enough to flip a horse like that you must be going too fast

I didn't see the first video as it had been removed for copyright reasons - on the second one it doesn't seem to me she was going unduly fast, but I always find it difficult to tell on You Tube clips, they never seem to run in 'real time' for me

the side-on view was much more informative. whether it was playing back slightly too fast on youtube or not, it showed that she was, very very unfortunately, on an absolutely horrible stride, but did nothing about it, just kept galloping... usually if you're on one of those you either check or kick, to give the horse some indication of what to do at the fence, but it looked as if she trusted him to sort it out, and he trusted her to have got it right... just an absolutely horrible, awful case of slightly crossed wires.

Ah thanks I thought a side view would be more informative. Makes me feel ill watching it though....

I saw a rotational fall when I was fence judging once, not at my fence, it was just horrible even though horse didnt land on rider and both walked away fine

I was actually at Rolex standing on the hill just next to fence five where the accident happened. It was sickening and very tragic. In Laine's defense she had already ridden a horse around there clear earlier in the day though I did not see that round.

From where we were standing we had a good view of fence four too. It was a very large pair of oxers running downhill and she simply flew down the hill at them, the horse was not well balanced and she was incredibly lucky to hit them on a good stride and to be riding such a genuinely athletic horse. Tragically, at the next fence, which was so much simpler, her luck ran out. For those of you in doubt about the speed; it was extremely fast. I have no wish to see it on YouTube but I can tell you it certainly wouldn't have been artificially sped up.

It was distressing to watch as the horse, high on adrenalin, managed to stand for a few minutes before collapsing. He was apparently still alive when he arrived at the veterinary clinic but it was fairly apparent that his best option was to be PTS.

I hope Laine recovers quickly and wish her all the best for the future; whatever the speed, it was still a tragic accident and she has lost a much loved member of her 'family'.
 
I was at Rolex this year. I did not see Laine & Frodo's fall. Does anyone have the video or any pictures of it on their computer that they could e-mail me? Call me weird but I really need some closure. I need to see it, to see exactly what happened, analyze it and learn from it. Know what can be done to prevent it.

I was standing at the Foot Bridge fence when Sarah Hansel and her horse The Quiet Man approached and attempted to jump it. I didn't realize I got the whole thing on video until after it happened. Got many pictures as well. . . you can see exactly what went wrong. Very sad.

My heart goes out to everyone involved in both of these tragedies.
