rowreach - thanks as always for your opinion. You are a font of knowledge on everything I need to know lol...

My other idea was a border terrier but they must be like hens teeth in ni. Can't find a single kc breeder or any pups for sale :(

Fiona

Paha I need to meet Mr Fiona in the petrol station again, I have a bag full of giveaways that you might like :D Borders are lovely, I bred them too :D I was going to suggest a rescue (Almost Home in Moira) but I know they have a restriction on the age of children in adopting familes, not sure what it is though. But I recently got a puppy from them and she is gorgeous!

I know someone in Islandmagee with borders, I shall ask ...

I have a Welsh terrier, a similar sort of dog, he is just about the perfect dog, his only flaw is a big one and its recall when he is in chase mode. For this reason he isnt allowed off the lead unless he is in our contained field. when something flappy or squeeky isnt catching his eye he is placid, obedient, not destructive, clean, playful and loving yet independent, he can occupy himself all day at our smallholding but will play if you invite him to. I adore him, he is the ideal horsey person's dog, he looks smart and dapper and is a great rough and tumble bloke's dog at the same time

Our JRT puppy is gorgeous but I can see is going to need a close eye on which will be a change for us!

Thank you everyone for replies. ..

rowreach - in your opinion as a breeder, was recall a problem in fox terriers?

Fiona

Not if they are trained well from puppyhood, but they don't like cats much. They are one of my favourite dogs, but I wouldn't have another, if that makes sense? I kind of think that "working" breeds don't always make great "pet" breeds, but again there will always be exceptions.

I have an email to register with Almost Home, but as you say, they might turn us down completely because of 4yo...

We were in Cavan the other day, I was reminding Mr F about your petrol station rendezvous :) F has outgrown the hat, but we still use the stirrups and guards, and get complimented on them by every new PC instructor who all think they are a great idea.

Does your friend in islandmagee have pups often??

I emailed two border terrier breeders yesterday, but no reply as yet.

Welsh D - don't worry about your JRT yet, we had had 2 and their recall was good....

I think every dog is different. We have 2 working lakelands. Full brothers just a year apart in age. They couldn't be more different. One has a great recall and gets on well with every dog he meets. The other is the most stubborn terrier I've met, not a great recall and likes a scrap. They have the same parents, we got them at the same age, trained and socialised the same etc. That said they are both lovely dogs, great personalities and love people. The stubborn one loves a cuddle! Both good with kids. Neither good with anything small and furry, but that's to be expected. We also have a JRT so full of little monsters in this house 😄

Whippety type lurcher? I have 2 and they are amazing! I always had gun dogs before, but never again :) Small ish, total couch potatoes, but will be up and out all day if you want them to be, and they are the most loving and cuddly creatures I've ever met! They adore everyone and everything, and are especially good with kids of all ages. When my niece was little and used to stay, Dylan used to go into mouring for 24 hours when she went home

UPDATE. ....

I've bought the pup. Checked out the family, not puppy farmers etc.

Went to visit tonight. Met mum lakeland and dad fox terrier. Both family pets. Not working strain. Both lovely. Interested but no barking.

Two pups left. Picked the smaller one with wirier coat and told calmer temperament. ..

Coming home on Wednesday as I've a week off work to settle her in..

Just want to say THANK YOU to all of you for sharing your stories and being so fabulously helpful, please all have a big glass of wine on me and THANKS X X

Lots of pics on Wednesday, and now I need to remember all the puppy stuff like socialisation and crate training and house training. .....
