Does anyone on here own a Lakeland Terrier?

Would be interested to speak to anyone who does, especially of working type!

I have worked and bred working strain Lakelands for over 27 years they are the king of Terriors! Thankfully the working strain and KC registered dogs are very different.
so much better than snappy russells and nutter raterdale paterdales which are only a local sub species of the Lakeland Fell Terrier, and Border Terriers which have been bred too short in the Muzzle damm the K C to accentuate the Otter head shape but leaves the eyes much more prone to damage my Mother always had Farm bred Borders from Northumberland years ago and they were hellers at work but most of the ones I have seen of late just dont seem to have it in the same way anymore.
Try to get your hands on a copy of The Working Fell Terrier by Brian Plummer (the best book he has ever written)
I only have one left at the moment a large strong Black and Tan but a really GREAT MATE.

If you can find a copy, I'd recommend "The World of the Working Terrier" by David Harcombe, published by Fieldfare, ISBN 0-9514053-2-2. Plummer was a very entertaining writer of fiction.
 
The reason why it is a Good book is because it is not about Plummer who is basicly an A*** and I would have to say it is the definitive work on Lakeland Terriers.
 
Agree with above comments ref. KC breed standards.

The breed standard for the Border Terrier states that the adult dog shoud weigh between 6 and 7 kilos. OK........

Bear The Border was castrated at the beginning of the month. Prior to the op, he was weighed, and tipped the scales at - wait for it;)- a shade under 10 kilos........:eek: (I must admit, I did squeak at this!;))

The vet, however, was not in the least bit startled - 'good, strong, sturdy young dog, with a super mouth and gleaming teeth'! :D (Is there a 'proud as punch' icon on here somewhere?!)

I'm very, very careful about what he gets to eat (deffo no Bakers!;):D) and how often, and his exercise regime is an extremely active one. And looking at him, he is definately not carrying anything extra, weight-wise.

Now Bear is a bigger Border than I've had in the past. He's longer in the leg and back than Tugg, our old BT. But I haven't measured him at the shoulder.
Tugg was bred in England, and Bear was bred in the Czech Republic, from working parents. Dad also happens to be National Champion. :cool:

So I can only assume the British KC standard is different from the Czech. As I don't understand a word of Czech, I am a bit limited here. But from what I can see, the Brit KC standard is a load of tw***le........ If Bear was 7 kilos max, he'd be classed a welfare case and taken off us, I'm sure!
 
As long as it can span and fit down a fox earth ..well it`s ok! The ones being shown are positively emaciated ,possibly so they "span" when natural weight they would not?:confused:

Flipping heck, my border wouldn't fit in bear cave let alone a fox earth!:D He is though, the best and quickest terminator of rats!
 
Glad there are many more that love 'em!! :D My girl loves to pick fights with my other girl and old man but leaves the boss dog alone (she's not stupid ;) ). She's a very good worker though and loves running round the fields. She's the most loveable dog we have and loves nothing more than a cuddle in front of the fire after running round all day!

Anyone else's obsessed with tennis balls?
And any tips for recall? She has VERY selective hearing....proper terrier!

Currently in the process of upgrading the garden fencing, she leaps over our 4' fence with no problems and is then a bugger to catch!
 
I have a lakeland fell terrier and even at 9 months is obsessed with balls, grand dogs with plenty of character but great temprements if bred well. If you can go to some local country shows with a proper working terrier show, perhaps a bit late this year but most of the guys there will happily talk terriers and working all day long and have loads of information. I ended up talking to a guy on Monday who was part of a terrier racing team who turned out to have owned my pups grandfather!
 
I've had GSDs all my life (both as child and adult) and still have one now BUT I am now also the very proud owner of a Lakeland X. She is absolutely wonderful: loving, funny, feisty, clever, playful, good with people and other dogs and fab on the yard.
Would recommend them to anyone. :)
