Does anyone else have one of those horses.. The one that's "perfect" (for their owner) 99% of the time, but is incredibly frustrating on the occasions they misbehave?

LL is one of these. I won't bore you with details, but usually she astounds me & makes me very happy :D

Then, on the odd occasion she's naughty, she's not the usual kind of naughty.. She goes into what I've named "Gaga Mode", where she barely seems to recognise I'm there. Usually it's when lunging. She still lunges, but only half-hears commands & won't look at me, just stares straight ahead.

Nothing I've tried so far seems to snap her out of it. It's not a massive problem because it's only once in a blue moon, just incredibly frustrating since she's normally so good.

I'm used to SS being a pain - it's usually once in a blue moon she actually behaves ;) - but it's so out of character for LL..

Anyone else have a horse like this? :p

Oh God, yes.

I am a bit horseless when it comes to the 'my own' variety, but have a number of other rides, ranging from a 15.00 hh, 17 yo ISH to a 6 yo 17.1 KWPN via a 16hh TB and a 16hh IDx. I love riding them all, and teach the owner once a week on the 16hh TB.

I was trying desperately, and failing, to teach the owner some basic lateral movement aids the other week. The mare was absolutely not having any of it. I was asking for three steps before pushing on straight again. Cockily, I got on, knowing full well that when I had ridden the week before, the leg yield had been right there, if a little hesitant.

I collected the trot a bit, and rode in about 10m off the long side. Asked for a bit of leg yield and the horse just stuck her nose in the air and carried on forwards. Oh. So I try again. Same thing happens. Oh. How blooming embarrassing. Try the other rein. Oh. I got off hanging my head in shame and made her work on her canter transitions instead.

Suffice to say that when her owner had another go the next day, she did it like a pro. I rode her yesterday and it wasn't a fluke. Blurry horse. Definitely a fingers in the ears moment.

You've just summed my mare up in 1 post!!! I feel your pain, nothing snaps her out of it once she's in one of those moods  not naughtiness just plain frustrating!

when you say once in a blue moon could it be caused by her oestress cycle my kitty is usually fine when in season but occasionally it does cause problems

Hereshoping, that is HILARIOUS & exactly the sort of thing that has & will happen to me :p It's just so infuriating when you can't work out WHY the commands aren't going in!

LRR, I had thought of that.. But it tends to be less frequent than when she's in season :S Sometimes there'll be a trigger, for example, it's impossible for her to pay attention after she's seen another livery ride their horse down the field to school or jump in a paddock.. I think it's just sheer damn nosiness, but she almost spooks at the corner closest to where they disappear out of sight..!

But then other times there has been no trigger that I can tell (she's normally unflappable anyway) & she's just in that mood from start to finish.

That's usually when I go off & have a sulk.. :D
