As above really, my mare has really bad condition feet at the mo doing everything possible to improve them but a slow process. I had her shod last weds and she seemed a bit sore which progressively got worse until the shoe was taken off by a different farrier on Friday. I wet poulticed for 3 days and have done dry ever since. The vet came out on Monday and said V likely to be an abcess and to do the poulticeing etc, she also advised me to keep washing the hoof out with Iodine to help with hardening as she has very soft soles.

Nothing is coming out on the poultice and while she is much more sound than she was a few days ago she still seems sore, do you think this is just due to having a bare sensitive foot??? I just dont want to get the shoe put back on then find I have the same problem and have to start the process all over??

I have had this with her before but didn't keep a record of how lame she was before having the shoe put back on, this time I have and would advise anyone to do the same just in case the same problem re-occurs in future.

Are you sure the farrier didn't just shoe her badly in the first place? Sounds like the nails were a bit too close to sensitive bits! If she had an absess then it's likely that it would have come out by now and you'd have spotted the resulting gunk.

That did seem to be the initial problem, just where that side of the hoof is so crumbly there wasn't a lot to nail to which is why he's had to go closer than he would normally. Turns out she is one super sensitive horse! You wouldn't think it she is a right lump! xxx She currently has side clips on the front but may have to go for front clips so he has more to nail to for the meantime.
