Lame after shoeing

Michen my Connie is just getting over concussion laminitis. I thought he had redone a suspensory because he stumbled and went lame, then sound and two days later lame again. I was mortified when the vet told me because he is on a very strict routine as well, slim and in work. He didn’t present with any of the usual laminitis warnings and had cold feet and only very faint pulses so don't rule it out.

Thanks I definitely won’t rule it out. It just seems too coincidental that he was sound, got shod and then went lame.

I am meant to go to France this Thursday and my other horse is meant to come home when I’m back on Monday to be scanned etc. At this rate I’ll just go get him sooner, skip France and combine vet visits for the two of them ??

Thanks, I think he will be ok. It was turning on a small circle that gave it away and the fact his suspensory was absolutely fine. He has been on box rest and in the sand pen for about 6 weeks but was getting very grumpy so he is now muzzled and went out for the first time last night. I had all his shoes removed so although he is a bit ouchy on stones he was sound on grass and concrete this morning.

Hope you also get to the bottom of Bogs issues.

Thanks but how did they diagnose it ie x rays? How do they know it's laminitis over bruising for example.

Spoke to my vet- he's brilliant and said I should have just text him despite it being a weekend.

Anyway he says as he's still not quite right to keep him in for a few days and bute him, stop the bute on thursday and then see how he is friday.

He said it's extremely likely to be the shoeing given the timing and isn't worried about concussion/bruising at this stage- think logically on those time frames!

He’s had it previously so medically it fitted, it was just me that got it totally wrong. X-rays last time didn’t show anything up so I will have them done when he is reshod and get vet and Farrier together so they can discuss anything they need to. I’m lucky my Farrier shoes the vets horses and they work together all the time.

Your vet sounds a very sensible sort.

I don't know about you but the weather has been so wet here and its played havoc with the horses feet, my farrier said his seeing lots of soft sore bruised feet at the moment so it could just be that the feet were a bit sensitive in general and the shoeing has just tipped it over the edge.

Mine has just gone short in front (bilateral) - she has problematic feet. Flat thin soles - has been out of shoes to rehab. In shoes now as can’t cope with our rough hard ground but will take off again this winter. I suspect her issue is balance - it’s v tricky this time of year and I have gone to 4 week cycles in previous summers to counter. She’s due to be shod tomorrow - vet is very used to her. She is now in with some v short turnout and I’m walking in hand to maintain exercise (she’s striding out in hand). I don’t think it’s lami, no heat or changed pulse but like you won’t rule anything out. I will x-ray (vet booked) mainly due to history and was due September anyway. It could also be bruising - we hack a lot over rough stoney ground. I’m told that lots are suffering this year and pads aplenty.

So stressful isn't it! I have another with not great feet- flat etc whose coming home next week and I'm dreading the foot rehab drama.

I could therefore do with my main dude, with the generally excellent feet, keeping them that way

If it is a bruise, I had a good result with hot kaolin paste which disperses the bruising more quickly than just box rest. You pop it on a poulice, bang it in the microwave and whack it on the foot as hot as you can bear. A special treat to do in winter because it warms your hands and smells delicious. My vet at the time pit me on to it when old Flat Foot had a bruise.
