Hi all,

Has anyone ever had a horse go lame after tetanus vaccine in the chest?

Had a different vet and he was quite rough and horse is quite sensitive. When softly touching the vaccine site, she does react as though it’s painful.

This is 3 days after the vaccine and never experienced this before. She does have a history of lami however, feet are fine, no heat or digital pulse and had them trimmed Wednesday and was fine.

Stumped and will be calling vet on Monday if no better.

Lami is not a usual risk factor after a flu/tet jab. Ring your vet and discuss it with them.

It’s more likely a localised reaction to the injection, and the inflammation in the chest can make them lame. I’ve had that happen, and the horse was very sore for a time. The vet may recommend bute.

It could go on develop into an abscess.

But best to chat to your vet asap, a visit might not be needed but advice is.

Not laminitis no but yes I had a TB that was hopping lame after his first jab with me.
The following years I buted a few days before and after and had no problem.
The first year he was so lame the next day he looked like he’d broken a leg.

My horse always reacts to tetanus. I always have in the chest as when in the neck she can’t eat, I would rather that she struggles to walk. The length of time varies but only normally a couple of days max. Another horse had a bad reaction and we ended up getting half a bucket of pus out of her chest. The drug company paid the vet bill excess on that one. Keep an eye if it swells you will need a vet, but if it’s just stiffness I wouldn’t worry unless it drags on.

Yes Louis couldn't even walk after about 4 hours after having his jab, the injection site swelled up like the size of a melon.

He now doesn't have that brand of vaccine.

I give him bute before and after each vaccine now.

Yes - ours ended up with an abscess in the chest - it swelled massively. After a course of antibiotics it went down luckily and didn’t have to be lanced. I was told it was a problem with the batch at the time and that was why they were doing the vaccines in the heat rather than in the neck. You need to ring your Vets and report it so they can keep a record of the batch number. Has anybody else has any problems recently? As two of ours are due to be done in a couple of weeks and I am dubious. I won’t be letting them do in the chest either way!!

When mine were vaccinated earlier this year, I was warned by my vet that they had had a few reactions to that particular vaccine. Equillis Prequenza Te batch A310A01 Both of mine were sore after, and the spotty had a large swelling on her chest and was pretty down for a couple of days. They had bute for a few days and got over it.

Yes. Absolutely hopping lame.

Have never seen anything like it. Got the farrier straight out, assuming it was just coincidental timing and that he must have an abscess. No abscess.

Then got the physio out who went over him like a fine tooth comb and couldn't find any reason for the lameness.

It took the best part of a week to self resolve.

Two of mine reacted to flu/tet in 2022. Both developed big lumps and went lame.

Got the vet back out and both got danolin and cold hosing/compresses.

There was talk of a few having reactions due to the antigen (not the correct word, having a blank) that was the carrier in the vaccine.

One hasn't been vaccinated since due to a different illness but the other gets vaccines separately now, no more combination jag.
