I went to do the horses yesterday morning and noticed that my usually lively mare was a bit quiet and did not rush over for her breakfast.

As she eventually walked over I noticed that she was walking a bit funny almost like she had cramp in her hip (off side hind), the more she walked the easier it appeared to get but not 100%.

I had a good feel round, no swelling, no heat, no marks or evidence that she may have been kicked (highly unlikely but you never know!). I checked her feet in case there was a stone stuck but all feet were clean. I had a good feel and she did not flinch at anything! She was reluctant to put all of her weight on the offside hind which is where the problem appears to be coming from.

I gave her muscles a bit of a rub and she enjoy this and even fell asleep!

My question is does anyone have any idea what this may be or what may have caused it? She is a bit better this morning but ceases up if she does not move for a while, so I am reluctant to leave her in.

Thanks

I was also thinking possibly pus in the foot. A couple of weeks ago my mare went suddenly lame & just like you, nothing obvious at all. Vet came out, nerved blocked her leg and turned out to be pus in the foot. After getting all the nasty stuff out (not too much because we had caught it early) she was fine a couple fo days later.

Hope your mare is ok soon LBxx

She is barefoot and feet were trimmed last Sunday, I did think the same thing but would have thought that if she was a bit footsore then it would have happened sooner

Went up yard after work and her foot had started to swell so applied a poultice, this morning there was some pus on the poultice so I have applied another and hopefully she will be a bit better later on.

Amymay and LilBonn you were both right!

Just glad that I know what it is now, she is obviously a very sensitive girly

Might be worth getting farrier to have a check over it to make sure it all comes out...will make healing process much quicker.
