My mums dog, Buffy, has been lame on one of her front legs for about 2 weeks now.

There isn't anything obviously wrong, and she gets better if mum makes her stay in but then she goes lame again if she goes for a walk.

Any idea's what could be wrong? She's 6 BTW and very energetic!

Sore pads? Especially if you have any broken glass around.

Something stuck in the foot e.g. thorn, grass seed, bramble, holly etc etc etc.

Or something else entirely!

Maybe she's pulled something?? My dog does this all the time, and he'll be lame on and off for a few weeks and even worse when he's exercised on it and then suddenly it justs goes. We do try and rest him as much as possible when this happens now which isnt easy but it does seem to get better a lot quicker?! not really sure what else it could be? Sorry, probably havent been much help really!!

Thanks guys, there is nothing in her pads etc.. well nothing visible anyway!

Perhaps if she had a big rest it would get better but she's a pain in the ass if she isn't allowed out to play and makes you feel really guilty!

Guess we'll have to put up with her!

Vet is next point of call but we've just been waiting to see if it gets better on it's own I guess. She is a x breed but we think she has some kind of whippet/GH in there somewhere.. no she is sound when she has rested but then is worse after exercise, she's ok while she's going but then is lame around the house afterwards?

It sounds like she's pulled something. Stella had a dipping shoulder a while back, caused by playing too roughly with other dogs. It would be fine for a few days, and then she'd be back to dipping. It took a week of leash walks only, plus anti-inflammatories, to get her back to normal.

thanks prose - she is a bit mad when she goes out so I guess that will undo any good heeling she's been doing resting!

I would start by digital palpation of each toe in turn ( on the lame foot) If she responds then it is probably a 'knocked up toe' common in the running breeds. The ligament that connects the toe often gets over stretched and anti inflammatories and limited exercise for a while usually sorts it out.
