Lame gundog update

Gundog came home lame the Wednesday before Xmas. We looked her over and couldn't find anything. She had a sore patch on her paw but we couldn't see anything. Then OH thought it might be further up in the leg but I was pretty sure it was paw. Today we have pulled a great big black thorn out!! Thank god!! She is sound!!

Well done. I had similar with my GSD, lame but nothing to see. I poulticed it for a couple of days and then the teeny end of a thorn appeared and I too pulled out an enormous blackthorn. They're horrible things.

Huge relief for you both..?
My poodle boy was briefly” lame “on his walk last month ..he held his leg face high…I looked at the paw and there was a flipping hazelnut inside the toe pads..I can share your relief..it could have been so much worse!

Poor girl! No infection, hopefully? I remember Zak going suddenly totally lame, huge pyracanthas thorn stuck in his pad!

Years ago I missed an awn that had tracked up into my Airedale’s paw, she wasn’t too lame but ended up having a toe off. ?

Glad that you found it. Blackthorn thorns are evil - I nearly lost a horse to one once when a thorn managed to get stuck in a tendon. It took a course of very evil antibiotics to get rid of the resulting infection.

Like doesn't seem right for a couple of stories!! A bit of pus came out after the thorn so we have cleaned it all in salt water and we will keep an eye on it. I've been fortunate enough never to have had major issues with black thorns but have heard awful stories about them. So relieved x dog is like a pig in poo!!

I think it is a dog evolution thing, dogs that I walk that pick up a thorn either stop dead and hold their foot up for inspection or hobble over to show you. unless they are busy working something. Glad your dog is better OP, thorns are nasty things

She is usually bit of a wimp so we were hoping she would obviously react when we were prodding about. She reacted slightly but not like I would expect. The same shoot is on on Wednesday but she is not going as its full of black thorn hedges!!

Not sure if its the done thing but it certainly didn't hurt!!
