Hi all I have a 20yr old retired TB mare that has previously torn a check ligament, she has now come in from the field with a swelling over the check ligament area which is hot, but the rest of the lower leg down to the pastern area is also swollen. The mare is a drama queen at the best of times so is lame but not hopping. The leg is being iced and she is on painkillers etc. but I wondered if there could be something else going on with the leg that would need investigating or if its just swelling tracking down from the ligament as she is not using the leg properly.

All help much appreciated

Have you called the Vet? If not best to be safe. In this weather i would advice hosing it see if you can get some of the swelling down. Sorry cant be of much more help but it could be a number of things. Good luck hope she is sound soon!

Have been cold hosing it does bring the swelling down but just as it starts to look better it all blows back up again and we're back to square one this morning the leg was so hot the hose just wasn't getting the heat out hence went to ice was hoping to avoid a £65 call out fee and £125 at least scan fees, by just trying some treatment ourselves first

cold hosing, ice bubble booting, bandages and box rest. 5 days bute to help reduce inflamation when inflamation gone, stop bute to see if horse is still lame, if horse is still lame without bute get on to vet asap, this is what i would do but depending on the severity of the lameness say 3-4/10 then get the vet out anyway.

ok whole lower limb swelling issue solved she's had an abscess thats burst out the coronet band this only happened tonight so can now focus all attention bk on the tendon/ligament injury that will hopefully start to show improvements now this has burst

I would still be cautious as there was heat and swelling in lower limb at the site of a previous injury.
A foot abscess won't cause any swelling elsewhere in leg so be careful!

the ligament/tendon area is still under treatment and it was defintaely an abscess that has popped out of the coronet band and all swelling from the pastern and fetlock area went down as soon as it popped so I'm takin it as healed but I will keep an eye on it as I have been warned that as it's burst high up it can become infected.

Don't agree with post saying abscess won't cause lower leg swelling- my girl's lower leg blew up hugely with an abscess- it was a nasty one which blew out of her heel and caused massive swelling over 24hr period all the way up to her hock. She too is a drama queen! Hope all will resolve!
