hi could anyone shed some light on my situation please , my mare had an abcess that was treated and went away , she is normaly a very forward going and fast mare, two weeks ago she was not as willing as usual and I noticed something wrong, she came in lame the next day and was rested she recovered quickly and has been turned back out. However I rode her for 15 minutes the other day and she was slightly nodding and holding back again, the next day she galloped across the field with no problem at all. The farrier has checked her and said there is no abcess . Has anyone has a similar problem, ive decided to rest her but dont understand why she would be lame and then not and then feel lame again, she doesnt look lame but she does have fluid on her right fore above the fetlock which has always been there , no heat has been detected at all, she is 16 years old and arab x welsh, and has done 25 mile pleasure rides last year, this year we are working more on the roads because I had to move her. should I carry on riding or resting. any info greatly appreciated she means so much to me and I dont want to mess her up before her time , I will call the vet if I dont find the answer, but maybe its nothing to get too worried about ,

Could it be a fractured pedal bone? My anglo-arab fractured his pedal bone a few years ago and the symptons were very similar. Anything where it isn't obvious what is causing the lameness is definitely worth x-raying, especially if you are sure it is in the foot. Concussion from working on roads has been know to contribute to pedal bone injuries! Also, at 16 she is old enough for degenerative problems to be occuring. I would speak to your vet.

Does she have shoes on or is she barefoot?
Could it be something as simple as her being foot sore when the ground has hardened?
My pony was off work for a while last summer with a mystery lameness- some days she was sound other days she was abit 'off'.
Put her shoes back on and she's been fine ever since!

my pony feigns injury. a few times when being ridden he pulls up as if hes broken his leg - he literally has it dangling and refuses to walk on it. The first time i called the vet as soon as he arrived he was sound. Its funny how he always done it when ridden. Still does it to this day.

I would call the vet to be on the safe side, good luck.

no she has always been shod, she isnt lame today and the swelling , puffyness above pastern has gone down , think she is improving , many thanks
