Sorry this might be quite long:S my horse went lame a couple of weeks ago due to abscess, had shoe taken off, poulticed etc few days letter got shoe back on and was sound. 2 days letter pulled shoe off and was lame as shoe had come off. Farrier came out and put shoe on, horse then lamer than when he had it if IMO, anyway horse is wimpy TB and farrier said see how he goes for couple of days. So left him out, nothing improved so decided to leave in an poultice. When picking out foot loads of black goop came out right near his frog so presumed this was where abscess was, rang farrier who came out next day but he couldn't find an abscess but horse painful to hoof testers all over the sole of his foot. Farrier reluctant to take shoe off as horse doesn't have best feet in the world and hes struggled to keep them on lately so there quite cracked. Yesterday (day after finding black goop and poulticing again) horse looked sounder. Anyway poulticed again and decided to turn out with mega poultice drowned in duck tape!! as been in stable for a few days because of it. Dont like leaving him in as he gets filled legs! So went down 2nite after horse been out 24hrs and hes even lamer. So decided to leave in and poultice. Because the farrier didnt find anything im worried that its something more sinister but then he didnt take shoe off and because hes been lame since shod im wondering if hes been pricked with a nail or something. I'm just after any ideas really as I have 2 horses and both are broken at min so im very fed up!! I have farrier coming mon 2 take shoe off and if no better then going 2 have 2 get the vet

If it was clear then perhaps it is something else? However - Ive got a delicate warmblood thats prone to abcesses and lameness and rubbish feet so totally with you on this one! The only thing I had with him once was two abcesses - one had cleared but was still lame so farrier had to hunt around for the second which after alot of hassle, trimming etc we did find it. That was then drained and poulticed and he was sound but only after a month or so.....arent they great!
 
It's an absolute pain isn't it! I've hibiscrubbed his feet, soaked them in hot salty water, used peroxide and purple spray! not all at the same time! but i thought if i can do anything 2 try and kill the bacteria!!! just scared now if the farrier doesnt find anything once he takes the shoe off! It's just frustrating cuz when u look at how to prevent them everywer it says regular shoeing etc but he gots shod correctly! I'm at my witsend i really am! Im just worried its something worse as hes come in lamer when hes been out in the field but then if it is a nail prick .. o i don't know! do u think it wud just be an abscess if hes lamer when being out?
 
Is there any obvious heat or swelling elsewhere on the leg? If there is heat around the coronet I would say more chance of being an abcess but then Im no expert! LOL. It could be severe bruising if he a delicate one from perhaps something like a nail prick??
 
would think it was a combination of bruising and infection. keep tubbing and poulticing for another couple of days then dry poultice for a couple more. if feet bad resist taking shoe off. plenty tape or a poultice boot should last in field for 12 hrs
 
I asked the farrier if he thought it was just brusing and he said no. No there's no swelling, he's not got particularly clean legs anwyay as hes a 10yr old exracer so has a bit of wear and tear. There is slight heat in his fetlock at the front. But when hes been on box rest his legs fill which if he has no infection they dont normally if hes in, all 4 fill if he has an abscess ive found in the past, which is what is happening now!! i hate horses there too stressfull! i just want him 2 wake up 2moro and be sound!!
 
I know this is probably wrong and I will be mega embarrassed but could it be a bad case of thrush? don't they say if thrush gets right into the foot black gloopy stuff can ooze out and make the horse lame?
