my mare has been lame for 2 weeks now. went lame after shoeing 2 weeks ago today(although vet thinks shoeing was a red herring! not nail bind or bad shoeing), turned out till the friday but got a bit worse so brought in for box rest. leg swelled up on the sunday, hoof hot, so vet was out, shoe taken off and she reacted to hoof testers. found a bruise and wee bit of blood. poultice put on. next day she did nothing but lie flat out, had a temperature and wouldnt eat. vet back out. poultice stayed on 4 days and was on antibiotics and danilon. no abscess came through so presumed bruising of the sole and she was never hopping lame. swelling went down in leg after 1 day so think that was maybe something else, ie puncture wound? but even now still heat in her foot. nerve blocks yesterday show lameness definately coming from her foot. now back on danilon and still stabled, xrays next week if no better. anybody else had anything like this?

Gosh, that sounds very painfull, and being immediately after shoeing, you'd have to think there was a link. To stop eating and lie flat out is quite alarming.

Has there been any previous lameness history with this mare?

hi, thanks for replying. nope no lameness, ive had her a year and a half and shes 5 in may. thankfully the heat in her foot seems to have gone and shes almost sound, just need to see what shes like once painkillers/anti-inflammatories are stopped. she didnt eat for nearly a day and i had to hold her feed up to her mouth to get meds into her. think she felt better once shed had them though and started eating again!! would just like to know what caused it all but may never find out i guess!
