My husband's horse came in from the field very lame even in walk. We trotted her up and she is nodding really badly. Very slight swelling above the fetlock on the affected leg and slight warmth in the very top of the hoof but nothing to explain such lameness. Hosed leg and bandaged with ice pack for a while. Went next morning to hose again and she was slightly less lame, hosed again last night. The vet is coming tomorrow, 1st time both vet and husband could be there at the same time, she is putting weight on it and resting a hind but anyone have any thoughts as to what's wrong?

Really? My boy has come in lame a few times and witha couple of day's rest and hosing he is usually fine within a day or so. Obv a big wound I would call the vet.

I wouldn't call the vet out straight away for a bit of swelling and heat, unless they were really lame. Mine came in like that Tuesday (lame in trot but OK in walk) I've kept him in and kept cold hosing it and everything seems OK again now. They sometimes just strain something whilst larking about in the field and its been very slippy what with it being very dry & hard, then very wet.
Hope he's OK.

that's my thinking as well, esp as she had a day off the day before so hadn't done anything. She was quite lame but happy to put weight on it. I can only think she has sprained it in the field or something, she does like to chase the other mares as she is a big bully!

I don't know about others but I wouldn't want to call the vet out of hours unless it really was an emergency, colic, gaping wounds etc. what do others think?
