Hi everyone,
My horse has bone spavin in both hocks, treated last summer with injections and was sound enough to hack comfortably. In March out hacking he pulled up lame, on his right fore and right hind. Right fore had a bad bruise and right hind is still being investigated. Initially thought to be foot injury, then navicular, now vet thinks it probably annular ligament.
Horse has had a month off work now to see how the right hind fetlock gets on, he still has a little swelling in tendon sheath but appears sound. He can't have total box rest as he stiffens up badly.
Anyway I have had him in for a few days as he got his grazing muzzle off (he's lami risk too) and his TB field mate has mild lami so I thought it was a good opportunity to rest that dodgy leg too.
Let him out for the day and he hobbled out lame on his LEFT FORE!!! No swelling, no pulses, nothing to see. Thought he was just stiff and could do with a day in the field but by tea time when I brought him in he was reluctant to move.
I am awaiting the vet and farrier but wondered if anyone has an idea what can cause such shocking lameness without any usual signs????????

HOPING its an abcess but poor lad looks shocking :(

If he's that painful I would be thinking foot?but strange you have no pulses. Could it be a laminitis flare up do you think?habe you had any X-rays/blocks done?ypu have my sympathy, I'm going through something similar at the moment with mine. Hope he's feeling more comfy soon.

I can't offer any advice i'm afraid, but just wanted to say you really have my sympathies and I hope it turns out to be an abscess or something equally as simple. I've got a similar problem with my old mare - spavins in both hocks which when first came on made her lame in front and we never got a true diagnosis for it. At first we thought lami but this was ruled out with xrays and then vet thought very mild arthritis in her coffin joint which was being aggravated from her weight baring on her front feet. Anyway, fast forward about 7 years and since we took her shoes off she has barely had a lame day since, until this year. Her worst hock gave her a bit of trouble this winter (we think she slipped and aggravated it) it seemed to be all fine again but now she is not right in front again so I don't really know what to make of it all. They are such a worry! I really hope your boy is feeling better soon x

Just an update,
Horse is now sound on front foot! After box rest, poulticing and a good dig around in his foot I can only conclude a sore frog! On the plus side his hind fetlock looks a lot better after the box rest so he's back out in the field with his mates. He's full of it and needs riding, I might have to get on him just to settle him down...
