Hi... Ive asked for advice on here a few times, and you lot havn't let me down yet. So here goes...

My 17.1 warmblood came in yesterday evening up to his eyeballs in mud & trying very hard not put much weight on his off hind. When trotted up he didnt look lame exactly, more...Very stiff. After cold hosing his legs i found no swelling lumps bumps or cuts, and so decided He must have tweeked something chucking himself about in his field. I kept him stabled the next day. (Today) Now both his front legs have swollen up so much, that there is no visible size difference in his knee, and the rest of his lower leg.

Is the swelling because i kept him stabled all day without bandages, When i should have turned him out?
Could it be connected to the stifness in his hind?

Any help or advice you have, as always will be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Jenny.

What does the vet say?

He might have done serious to the back legs even though there isn't any marks.

I would cut out all his hard feed until he can go out as that will make his legs swell up.

Well if his back leg hurts he would be putting more pressure on his front legs and making them fill. I would bandage him until that back leg is right and then take the bandages off and see what happens. Are his back legs swollen?

the filling in the front legs could be because he is trying to keep the weight off his hind and putting more weight on his fronts.
get the vet out to investigate the hind lameness, mabye because of the mud he could have pulled a muscle getting stuck.
when you found him lame there wouldn't have been swelling as it only comes when he stands still for a length of time without support.

Well, Im not sure if i should turn him out in the morning and see if being able to move around helps shift the swelling... Or keep him in. If he stays in... SHould i bandage him? Vet says bandages will only move the swelling elsewhere. But i have been advised otherwise by people at the yard.

Confusing!

Has the vet been to see him yet? I wouldn't turn him out if he is lame, take him for a small walk see if he is lame and if he is get the vet out.

Still no swelling or heat in the hind legs...
But both in the front.
Perhaps i should put him on Bute?
The vet suggested turning him out, and not bandaging at night - But keeping an eye on the stiff hind.
Other people have advised me to do pretty much the opposite though?
=\

Take him for a walk inhand to get the swelling to go and then bandage the legs once the swelling has gone? This is what I did with my mare when she cut her back leg, but all 4 legs balloned. I did just put the bandages on when her legs were swollen once (Lack of time on my part) and her legs were fine, swelling didn't move anywhere else. You won't know until you have tried?

You should do what the vet says. I would also call him and tell him you want him out tomorrow. If he has done something serious you are letting him stand there in pain and some injuries need attention quickly.

True.

Ok thanks.
If hes going back on bute the vet will have to come anyway. Its a nightmare.
I'll post the outcome of said vets visit once he's been.

Thanks.
