Hi there
My 10 yo welshie mare isn't quite right. I can't exactly pinpoint her sudden "lameness".

Sunday we had dressage on grass. Mare isn't so great on grass, tends to fall over rather easily. Ground is hard and arena on a slope, so I opted for some hard ground studs on at back and for good measure a road type stud (fairly flat and small) on the fronts due to the slope of the hill. Warmed up great but then halfway thru test on last canter it nearly felt as if she was either lame or disunited. Finished off test and walked her off and it all felt okay. (Another friend said her own horse did the same thing so I didn't worry about it at the time).

Monday she had the day off. Tuesday she was shod and I hadn't planned on riding anyway, but as I was putting her back in to field, she seemed rather footy across the gravel drive. She looked fine once she hit grass.

Yesterday I brought her out of stable tacked up ready to ride. She seemed rather reluctant to lift left up for me to stretch her. Got her to driveway, and she was absolutely hobbling. Trotted her up, couldn't decide if she was sore in near stifle which she'd injured this winter or her feet. There was absolutely NO heat in any of her feet, soles looked okay, no rocks no bruises no swelling in any joints. Didn't mind being poked and prodded where last winter when she injured herself she was a huge drama queen about touching stifle.

Decided that I'd try her in school to see how she felt -- reckoned that school with deep sand would make joints feel more obvious and if it was just that she's a bit footy after farrier, school would be softer. On school surface she felt fine. Okay, so decided that it was her feet. As there was no heat/swelling/bruising etc, hacked out, mainly on grass.

This morning, went up to bring her in, and in paddock she's really stiff and seems off on the near fore. What's going ON??? Checked feet, all okay. no heat, no stones, no bruising.

Any thoughts???

Very early laminitis???
Guessing isn't much help but there is a post by Kitsune yesterday saying much the same.
She decided to treat as laminitis until the vet came - which turned out to be exactly the right thing to do and as many others have said will do no harm if it is something else.
I would boxrest on deep bed and give well soaked hay until she is seen by a vet.
Hope she is better soon.

I hope not!

Vet and farrier coming this afternoon. Possible nail bind? Either way, not like my girl to be lame.

Thanks. I will certainly do that. My friend's TB was just recently diagnosed with lami - vets are saying this might be a bad year for it. I've been rather cautious - mare is in all day and out at night where in previous years she was out in summer 24/7. Trying to keep weight under control with strict diet -- she's a tall welshie at 15.1 and weigh taped regularly. She's sitting around 521kg. I'll be gutted if after my pre-caution she ends up with lami. Only thing I haven't done is muzzle her....

I wonder if farrier shod her a bit short or something? and what you felt on sunday may just be a coincidence. good idea to get farrier out, and then vet if farrier cant find anything.

Sounds very much like the onset of laminitis to me, especially as it's worse over the harder stony gravel. Hot feet are not always present. I would be geting the vet out to have a look.

misst - THANK YOU!

I had a sneaking suspicion but as it's been such a long time since I've had a laminitic horse I'd kind of not listened to my gut instinct. So you basically voiced what I'd hoped wasn't the case - and proved right. Early acute laminitis - both vet and farrier came sharp today. Seems she's got it possibly in all four - she's lame on every one of them! Vet hopes that it will turn round within a few days so not to see any changes within the foot. Farrier didn't want to take her shoes off or give her extra cushions (other than deep bed box rext) - and she has massive frogs anyway and jokes that she has built in heart bars anyway. However, he reckons that if she doesn't come right within a week or so that he'll have to custom make something up for her.

I'm following vet/farrier guidelines for rest/feeding so I'm feeling pretty well equipped. But thanks everyone for your input and so glad I posted.

Oh bu**er

Sorry it was lami but so glad you caught it - she will be fine I am sure. There is a lot of it about this year as you say.
It is my big fear with an elderly native myself who usually lives on sunshine and fresh air and still gets fat.
Best wishes for a swift recovery - keep us updated
