Maybe should be in vets, but more people look here.

Posting on behalf of my friend, re her pony. Pony is 25 and had wingalls on both back legs. The day before going lame went for short hack then canter in the school, all fine. The next day was lame when they set off for a hack. She has wingalls on her back legs, but one leg on the outside is swelled, feels like a bubble of fluid. Now its in the same place as her wingal, so could it be related? Or somethingelse? Shes been on box rest and bandaged behind since sunday.

Any ideas guys?

No not yet, as ponys not insured anymore due to age, so they wanted wait afew days before getting them out. They will do if shes no better tomorrow i think.

Just seems abit odd that is in the same place as the wingals, for it not to be related to them? But i know very little about wingals.

My oldish pony did something similar to this a few years ago and we think hes just strained something on his back leg as he doesn't go otu an awful lot but when he does he is quite forward going andtends to over-do things! I got on him and he just wasn't 'right' behind and I then noticed he had a warm, swelling on his leg.

We left him for a few days (he wasn't hopping lame) and he was fine after a rest. I would suggest initially to give him a break - if he's not too lame then I would say best for him to be out as much as poss as aposed to stabling him so he can walk about and help keep the blood flowing. When they're stabled he fluid can build up more. It may be he's just straind something in this muddy ground especially if he's been doing anything daft in teh field. I think oldies do tend to forget their limbs aren't as good as they used to be!

If the lameness persists or gets worse then get the vet out.

Hi thanks for reply. Should of said in first post, pony hasnt been out for over a week, as can only go out in dry conditions as she get foot abcesses. So has only been in stable, and hacked out.

This sounds as though it could be the tendon/ligament or somehow connected with it, as that's where the windgall is. For example tendon sheath damage.

I am sorry to sound like the bearer or bad news, but I would cold hose two or three times a day for about 20 minutes, or smother cold gel over the area. Bandage intermittently when its dry, for a half a day or the night, both hind limbs. Personally I would box rest until the vet comes and confirms. I wouldn't let the pony go where it can run about.
