ETA, I have no problem with the harmless fake posters, but I have a complete sense of humour failure when an animal's welfare is purported to be compromised and we are supposed to stand by and think an animal is getting sub standard care.

OK is it just me that doesn't rush to get a vet out at the slightest sign of lameness? I am starting to feel like a very careless owner reading this. I always wait a day or two to see how it pans out and if the horse remains lame I will ring my vet, discuss the situation with him and nearly every time he will say to wait another three days at least and if still a problem he would come out. I can honestly say I have never had to have the vet actually come out as the horse has come sound after that rest time. Obviously I don't attempt to ride them in that time. So am I alone here??

No your not alone. However you will pick up the phone to chat with your vet (which most of us would do to be honest). The key here is that the horse was kicked. And after two days there has been no improvement - you'd therfore think that the op would be concerned enough to phone her vet for advice rather than ask what could be wrong with the horse on a forum.

The horse could have a fracture or it could simply be bruised. Each condition requires a different treatment. ...

I do agree with you but I that comes down to your knowledge and experience. If you weren't sure and had to try and get answers or a diagnoses from the internet I'm sure the assumption would be that you are not experienced enough.
I rarely call the vet out but when my little Sec A got kicked hard I didn't hesitate. The vet was unsure but to err on the side of caution put a splint on her leg incase there was a fracture.
 
Was she lame front & back? Did i read that correctly?

I think the poor horse needs an extra fluffy pink rug. Obviously take all shoes off & bandage all round & feed copious amounts of apples, carrots & polos. She'll be right as rain in a few days :-)
 
I certainly don't call the vet at the drop of the hat, but I also DO NOT give BUTE to a horse unless the vet has seen it first. You aren't even meant to have 'spare' bute around to give to horses at your own whim to make them sounder so you can ride etc. In this case as it is dragging on box rest and vet is all I can say, plus tell the vet you have given bute.
 
I am glad that I am not alone! I have had horses for over 30 years and at home with me for 20 years so I can see if any of my horses are lame even if they aren't moving, just from the way they stand so would like to think I know when a vet is needed or just a telephone conversation will be enough. I do not understand OP if she was that concerned then a conversation with a vet is so easy to settle her worries. I have asked for advice on here before but that has been when the vet is due but I have wanted some opinions to put to the vet when he comes out. Surprised also that OP rode the horse instead of checking lameness from the ground for at least a week after accident happened.
I do keep a supply of bute as my older mare has had problems in the past but I would not give the bute to the others without speaking to the vet first.

^^^ I agree with MadBlackLab.

Go and get kicked by an unshod horse in your biceps femoris muscle. Then treat yourself the exact same way you have treated your horse... Go for a run the same day you were kicked then cold hose, take pain killers and apply a drawing agent. The next day, go for another run and repeat your treatment... the next day go for another run and wonder why your still in pain.

The farrier won't be able to do squat. Your horse has a muscle injury. She has bruising and micro tears to her biceps femoris muscle. She will heal and get better however it will take TIME and REST. Two things that you have not given her.
