Lame still....

You MAY or may not remember my previous posts on my girl suddenly going very lame about a month ago....There was no obvious cause of this, she was just very bad to turn either way and always wanted to walk on the grass.

Short version: horse lame only on lunge on right rein in trot.

Detailed version!:

I had the vet out who said it could be a number of things and wanted to nerve block (but as horses is quite dangerous with needles, was happy for me to explore other possibities- such as her shoulder)

Had a brilliant miofacial (sp) release and Mc Timmony lady out who said her shoulder was so ttense on the left that her chest was actually higher on that side (Left)

She/ we have been doing lots of treatments for this and she is now back to normal.

I have been riding her around the park on the grass for two weeks and trotting sound in straight lines.. I also have hacked out round the village (25 mins) in walk and trot on roads and she was still sound. (I want to take things slowly so have built up gradually)

I am now not allowed to ride for a week

(doctors advice!) so decided to lunge her in the arena last night using really large loops.

She was fine, totally sound on the left rein (in trot and walk) but on the right looked quite lame in trot....

I am going to get the vet out again as i think it has got to be more serious than shoulder now

I wondered if anyone has expereinced similar symptoms and what it turned out to be???? would it be best to nerve block (bearing in mind horse is extreamly difficult), or get the vet to come and scan to see if it could be a tendon?

Sorry its ended quite long... just thought i needed to get all the points across!

Me again... sorry...

just thought id also ask...

when she is stood in all night her legs are slightly more filled (this is probably normal in a 20yo), but after exercise (her walking gently) the puffyness goes down...

If it WAS tendons, would it not be the other way round??

(sorry for all the questions, never had to deal with lameness on this scale!)

Hi AmyMay

Yup, she actually went lame after the farrier shod her (day after) so i had him back two days later and he really prodded about and there was nothing (this is the horse who thinks she has broken her leg if she looses her shoe)

So quite sure there are no corns, abcesses forming there..

He also ensured she was standing absolutly level....

This is interesting as my horse has been the same since he was shod two weeks ago. Most lamesness is in the foot. If it was tendons it would be hopping lame I think. My farrier thinks its a bruised sole, the ground is very hard at the moment. But like you I am not sure either.

Decided to not ride for a week and see if it settles down, although I think bruising can take up to 3 weeks to heal.

The day before yesterday he was sound in the school, last night he was unlevel on near fore when we walked over some stones.
I dont want to keep him in because I think that sometimes causes more problems than it solves.

deicin.. thank you for your comments. I am sorry to hear that you are also experiencing lameness... it is so fustrating!

When your farrier suggested bruised soles, was he sore with the hoof pinchers? As my girl didnt react to this atall??

She has been completley fine in straight lines with me riding her, even on the hard road surface she was sound in trot... its just the turning right on the lunge (even on a large loop) which caused her to be lame.

I will not keep her in either, she is much better walking down the field each day to spend her hours in the sunshine (i am lucky as she dosnt tend to hoon about).

i know of a vet who can scan at the yard, so thought this may be an option, although i know that in the long run nerve blocking would be the best (and quickest) diagnosis!

UUURRRHHH!! FED UP!!!!

I would def get her nerve blocked if this persists. If it is a foot problem, to start with at least only one injection will be needed to see if she comes sound.
It could still be an absess, sometimes they are set in very deep & take a long time to emerge, we had one which burst after 3 months!!
No sign of any heat in foot, or swelling or heat in leg?

Hi Doris2008,

Blimey... 3 months!! what a nightmare that must have been! No there is no heat in leg or foot.

There is only a little swelling in the inside just below her knee but she has had this for about 3 months and it goes down with exercise.

Poo dont wrote a long reply then lost it - try again...

Having the same sort of issues with my mare - she was treated for bone spavin in her right hind hock around March time then brought back into work. Was all going well and started competing again, had farrier out 4wks ago Friday and the followin week she felt odd/lame, this time on front right. Have had vet out twice so far, and she comes up lame on the flexion but more noticeable under saddle in trot and on left rein/corners etc. She's also been on 2 bute a day for about 3wks now and hardly any change - its not getting worse, just not better either??? Feet were checked and no reactions etc

Vet is coming back on Fri to poss nerve block, but we are a bit stumped really. I hope we can include this in my claim for the spavin issues as that's still on going lol...

Any ideas?

Hi,

If the problem continues I would say that you should make attempts to get the nerve block done.

The symptoms you describe could be a number of things, but collateral ligament problems in particular can cause problems with the turn and also sometimes serious lameness and sometimes very slight.

I think prehaps you need to know as if you continue to work with slight lameness with tendon or ligament damage then you can cause alot more damage.

I have personal experience of this and wish I had got things checked out sooner.

Good luck and I hope it is something really simple, but please think about resting your horse until you know.
