Advice please, my horse went lame 4 weeks ago and I called vet who said looks like soft tissue damage, rest and call again if no change. It got better and now he is lame every 3rd stride on a circle in the school however I am getting such mixed opinions, some girls at yard say work him through it cause he has bone spavin so is stiff anyway after 4 weeks off, some say get vet to do loads of tests and some say rest it more. now I dont know what the hell to do cause every one has an opinion. Would does anyone think, cause it is only on soft he is lame?

get the vet - I had the same with my horse, rested him and he was still lame, worse on the soft than on a hard surface, vet thinks he may have slighly pulled suspensory, so had cortazone injection, 2 weeks walking out (ridden) on the roads, no turnout and he is now fine. Obviously not saying your horse has the same problem, but would still contact the vet even if just to ask for their opinion.

Thanks I was thinking same cause at least know what i am dealing with then, everyone seems to think I am mad and thats what put doubts in my mind.

My boy has been lame on and off for 2 months now with a soft tissue injury. Had 3 weeks rest and bute and when it still wasn't right had the vet back. Did full work up, nerve blocks and x-rays for them to show nothing so he said it must be soft tissue injury. A bit frustrating to spend a lot of money to find out that there's nothing we can do to help it get better, but pleased that I know what it is and that it's nothing long term. He got better, I overdid it a bit with him thinking he was ok again and he's lame again and I'm feeling very guilty.

It does sound like a soft tissue injury to me as it will only hurt them if their foot hits the floor at a certain angle so every few strides. Mine is worse on hard ground but depending where it is in the foot it could be that the afftected area only makes contact with the ground on a soft surface as it moulds to the shape of the foot. A soft tissue injury takes a lot longer than you think to get better, but I would still get vet back to put your mind at rest if nothing else.

The vet i use seems to like doing every test possible and I am reluctant to do it to find that rest is only option, however i am so so confused as no one on my yard even thiks that lame is pain so just gets on and rides, it is madness. there is no hat or swelling and never has been which is a absurd kind of way is very frustrating. Anyone else no about soft tissue injuries.

This is why it is always best to call the vet, these people are not professionals and some are cleary giving bad advice. Your vet can suggest tests, but you can refuse if you think they are pointless (although he will then obviously say he can't give a confirmed diagnosis)
