My mare fractured her jaw in May and was out of work for 3 months. We bought her back into work in the begining of September and she seemed fine, she has a lot of muscle wastage but otherwise she seemed fine. A few weeks later we took her into the school and she felt very lame near side fore, but we put it down to her being very unbalanced because she is being ridden in a Monty Roberts Headcollar at the moment because of her jaw injury, so we just thought she was struggling because she couldnt balance herself on the bit. But Mum still wasn't happy so she called the vet out, he did flexion tests and he said she had a swollen fetlock joint. We cold hosed her fetlock joint for a week and then bought her back into very light work (very short hacks, only walking) and she seemed fine, but Mum hacked her out tonight and trotted her along the flat and she felt 'lame', so we trotted her up and she was sound. What would you do? We don't really want to call the vet out yet as we have spent ALOT of money on vet bills with her jaw

Have you ruled out the foot? Absess brewing, nailbind, foot balance, etc.

Is there any swelling now? Heat?

If you dont know then you need the vet im afraid

Theres no heat or swelling
But the odd thing is that she is sound when you trot her up inhand but if you trot her while riding her she feels lame?

If she feels lame when ridden, she almost definitely is its just that you can't see it when trotting her up. If not swelling, heat or abscess in foot, I would suggest resting her, giving her bute or a no bute substitute for 2 weeks before calling the vet again. Keep her in her box if you can or turn her out for the shortest possible length of time each day. Thats assuming you can keep her calm in the box, if not, call the vet but he/she will prob suggest box rest and bute.
