Lameness after lying down

I have a 16 year old shire/cob who used to be a riding school horse. They stopped using him 2 years before I got him due to him not being suitable anymore (very strong) I have had him nearly 4 years now and he's been absolutely fine. The past couple of weeks I have notice that he is extremely lame in his front right when he gets up from lying down. Once he gets walking he is sound and will run around the field with no problem. I thought he might have the start of arthritis. He has been on no bute for a week, does anyone have any suggestions?

OK, if he is "extremely lame" every time, then it would be best to get a vet to look at him, because early treatment is likely to keep him going a lot longer than a bit of pain relief.

Thank you. Yes I will be getting the vet out to look at him.
 
Definitely worth a vet check.

I will say that I once had a heavy cob on loan that would frequently get a 'dead leg' if she lay on it for too long.

Hopefully that's all it is with your horse. 🤞

Thank you. That's what we are thinking as within a couple of minutes of walking he's fine, but will get the vet out to check him over

Take a video and show it to the vet so they see exactly what you are seeing.
