Hi Guys,

So my horse- 16.3hh 8yo KWPN went lame last weds AFTER shoeing. I got to the yard and popped him on the lunge, one direction he was fine in walk trot and canter and then went onto the other rein and he was fine in walk but was head bobbing in trot, nothing bad and not hopping just head bobbing and was obvs uncomfortable to trot as he kept bucking and cantering (not helping lol). This is on his front left. Took him back to the stable felt his legs and no heat, swelling or obvious injury. Checked his feet, no bruising ect but he has black feet so not easy to spot.
Turned him out for the next day as he gets silly in the stable when no other horses are about and would kick the door, bought him back in and exactly the same.
Called my farrier as he had just been shod, farrier could not find anything at all, took the shoe off checked for abscess nothing. He said my horse had been scrapping his leg hard on the brick wall literally climbing the wall during shoeing!! I said oh.. well didn't you try and stop him and he simply said.. no...hhmmmm.
He said he thinks he has gone lame due to this banging and scrapping on the wall very hard.. now im not sure if this would cause this?
I am giving him a week of rest in the field with his mates and coming in and cold hosing, he seems better walking out last night (no tripping and is turning on a tight circle much easier and crossing his front legs). I have not given him any pain relief and he is being turned out and is not uncomfortable. I am trialing this as if he has knocked his foot :\ or has twisted something in the field it will sort itself out.
I will check him again on Weds evening (will be the one week mark). If not will call vet.

Now does anyone else think he would go lame from scrapping the wall? I am not sure I trust my farriers ideas.. He has no heat, swelling or cuts, but I am cold hosing the whole leg.

Thanks guys x

Sounds more like your farrier has caught him with a nail. This can sometimes happen. If he is looking better now then I suspect that this is the case and now the shoe has been replaced, the offending nail will have been removed.

I did wonder this, but my farrier said there is nothing wrong at all.. Maybe he realized this took the shoe off rasped it a little and put it back on and kept it quiet? Hmmm I have not had this farrier for very long so you never know! Maybe I am just thinking into it a little to much lol.
i would appreciate it from my farrier if he had told me though if this was the case! LOL!
Fingers crossed he is sound when I trot him Weds night!
Thank you for replying!

Yes he put the shoe straight back on, he rasped it, squeezed it a little and then put the shoe back on.. he said he did not notice anything out of the ordinary. I said nail bind- he said he would be lame in walk also. I have not dealt with it before so unsure of symptoms!

That's what I thought, as all horses deal with pain differently.. he is not a wimp type at all so maybe walk wasn't sore enough for him to go lame at walk, I did find that he would randomly trip on that leg in walk (very randomly and not every time he walked out) when I was leading him and going round a corner he would trip randomly also. He seemed much better last night so I am keeping my fingers crossed it was just a sore nail :)
