My lad got a small cut just on the border of his coronet band and hoof over a week ago when going XC. Kept it clean and he seemed fine and perfectly sound. Then had a jumping lesson a week later and he caught a pole and also apparently stood on himself although he was still sound and finished the lesson and did some dressage.
Showed up very lame on that leg the next day – barely able to stand on it so vet came out, cleaned wound and advised it looked like he’d perhaps knocked the existing cut/got some dirt in it possibly causing a wee infection (cellulitus had started to develop around the wound).
He was given bute and antibiotics and a poltice was placed around the wound although nothing has been drawn out.
That was on Monday. He’s on 2 bute a day and is currently sound in walk and turned out in the field. Poultice came off on Tuesday evening as the area around the cut and also the back of the fetlock had become swollen and when I spoke to the vet he suggested this may be due to the poultice so was told to take it off, cover wound with iodine, sudocreme and a hoof boot and turn him out to keep him moving.
It’s now Thursday and there is still a fair bit of swelling and heat around the wound plus some more swelling and a little heat at the back of the fetlock. Was told to phone vet today for and update but he’s on holiday today (grrr!) so I’ve arranged for him to come out tomorrow but they can’t guarantee he can fit me in.
I’ve no experience of these types of injuries as pony has never had any issues before – Y/O is a bit puzzled that there is still so much heat there but says it could just be the bruising coming through.
Just wondered if anyone has any experience/can advise if this is normal or if I should phone the vet’s and arrange a different vet to come out today just to make sure he is seen to?
I don't want to seem like a paranoid owner but at the same time don't want to wait in case there is a more serious underlying issue!
