My bl**dy farrier let me down too- apparently he is poorly (I promise you he will be by the time I finish with him!) so now his feet wont get done until next week

Fingers crossed for a Sunday shoeing Rebels.

Sorry, for the let down Ali.... It just all adds so much to the stress.

I have a hacking buddy whose horse has this..... Not sure how it affects him, but he is sound, in full work and dressages and jumps etc

Maybe not the doom and gloom that it sounds at first.

I suppose that if they can rotate a certain percentage without too many problems that they could counter rotate with just as few problems... ???

Yes, indeed, pretty rotten news. But the replies you have had are the forum operating as I remember it. Sound anecdotal advice following veterinary attention and helpful pointers.

Sorry, but I have no experience whatsoever of this. I have everything crossed for you both. AmyMay, weren't you selling Thumper? Or have I gone mad

(Don't answer that!)

Yep, was selling him. Guess he'll be stayin now......

Having put everyone off that wanted to view him though, I guess I knew that before though. I adore him.

my horse has this in both his hind feet, was diagnosed over 4yrs ago in 2005 after vets thought it was an SI problem then had to investigate further after SI injury was ruled out. shoeing with wedges helped him no end and he was back eventing in 2006. he was shod with wedge pads behind until last June when he was diagnosed with suspensory damage, was possible that the wedges could have contributed to the injury but not a definite!! as he was off work for a long time his hind shoes were removed for about 4 months and this made the world of difference. he has been shod normally behind for 6 months now and is about to do his first event for 13 months next weekend.. doing really well, but i think that being out 24/7 has really made a difference to him too.
i guess it would be different for the front feet but please don't write your horse off yet.. fingers crossed the shoeing makes him more confortable.

Firstly, many thanks all for your responspes. Good to hear of others experiences, and the positive stories too.

Well, Thumper had a set of heartbar shoes put on on Friday, together with gel padding all over his soles (so covering the whole area). Essentially a pair of Air Jordan's.

I can't believe the difference. He's gone from significantly lame on Thursday to marginaly lame at the end of Friday. I'm amazed.

After the consult on Thursday I had been expecting wedges to be fitted. But my farrier was keener on the heartbars with the gel - and after talking to the vet, clearly that's what they both agreed on.

Feeling so much more happier now about the whole thing.

Ooh interesting one! Why the change of plan? My farrier was trying to fathom whether to put wedges on both front feet (which may cause a problem on the good foot) or to have him standing unlevel with one wedge and one flat foot- I wonder if heart bars and gels pads might be a better solution?

Please keep me updated on his progress!

Good, am so pleased for you. We are hopefully having heart bars in tomorrow before we have further nerve blocks in case it is something in the foot that can be helped. Think the vet is trying to avoid another nerve block as my horse has become needle phobic and tried to kill her last time.

I'll take some photo's tomorrow for you of the feet and the gel pad's etc. So you can have a good look.

When I spoke to my farrier initially the first things he said was heartbars - So all I can assume is that he was keen to try that with the gel pads first (after consulting with the vet obviously). I really coulnd't believe the difference in Thumper after trotting him up on Saturday morning.

Please keep me updated on his progress!

I've just caught up with this. AmyMay, all I can add is that its fantastic that your horse significantly improved with the remedial shoes. I hope he continues to improve.

My only advice is to keep in mind your insurance time limits and if your problems aren't resolved over the next few months, insist on further investigations including MRI, long before your time runs out on this claim. Also bear in mind feet problems often lesson during winter while the ground's soft. If its not something simple, it can get a bit on-going.

Good luck with him.

Thanks Flame. Not an insurance job at the moment - but yes, will become so if the problem looks to be ongoing.

I haven't read all the reponses here, but I thought I would join in as it sounds like a very simular problem to what I am in currently!

My lovely 9yo has been treated so far with normal shoes with gel pads which did not work, the lameness was improved but still there. He is now with heart bars with silicone pads, and goes back for a check up at the vets for more xrays in just over a weeks time. Fingers crossed they work, if not we shall be doing further nerve blocks to investigate the navicular bone.

I'm amazed to see how many others have simular problems on here! I have my fingers crossed for you all, and any good experiences will be appreciated as I'm a nervous wreck worrying about what the outcome could be with my boy!

I still havent got the shoes on!! I actually now have less shoes as the farrier found an infection in the lame leg and possible start of one in the other. This is all due to the previous farrier who changed the foot shape against my wishes (wish i had followed gut instinct but you tend to trust the guy with the qualification) which has caused some seperation between the hoof wall where the white line is. there is now infection in here so we have poultices on both front feet. Just dont understand what the hell is going on (feeling a little fed up as you can prob guess!) as i worship that horse and do everything i can for him and this still happens. However this may be the cause of the lameness which would explain why it has been getting worse. kinda optimistic as i would rather it is an adventurous abscess than anything else and also gutted that i am going round in circles with still no idea what is really causing the prob. Anyone got a stiff drink???

A bottle??

Yes, Thump's doing ok. Although a little difficult to tell now as he's been put on danillon to help with any soft tissue inflamation that he may be experiencing. He'll be on it for 5 days, off for two then re-assessed.

Hey guys! Fingers crossed for both of you that the horses are on the mend! Farrier is out on Thursday at 2pm

I mentioned to him that you are using heartbars rather than wedges Amymay- he said he'd think over the difference in the bath (ooh-er!) as the principle is very similar apparently?

I tried to take photo's for you today - but he was having none of it. Will try again tomorrow morning.

Don't forget I've got gel as well covering the sole.
