My horse has been lame thru PSD and has been successfully operated on and come totally sound.

Except she is now lame on the front leg. It is on the same side as the worse back leg and it does not seem to be related at all.

I think she has knocked herself in the field and I have left her in the stable and been bandaging but she is still lame after 4 days, the vet is booked to come out to see her and the farrier has had a look and it is not an abcess.

I left her bandages off for about an hour today went back and looked and I can see some definite swelling, the farrier also has this nifty thermometer thing that is usually used for measuring how dry concrete is. The large circle is 6 degrees hotter than the same place on the other leg, her hooves are both the same temperature.

Here are some photos - one without annotation so that you can see it more clearly and one with so that you can see where I mean.

Has anyone got any ideas as I am now getting very depressed.

Oh no!

6 degrees is very significant and that swelling is dodgy in character.

I'd book her in for a scan on Friday or next Monday

could it be could it be anything to do with extra strain on the joint when back leg has been injured? over compensating

No, because it is on the same side as the bad back leg and not on the diagonal. She was also ridden for 4 years while she was lame on the back and was jumping and winning 1.20 classes - not with me, and this front leg is new this week.

Does the swelling extend around the back of the fetlock?
Any swelling on the other side?

No it is just the bit circled, I haven't put any bandages back on her tonight so that I can see how bad it gets

Could it just be a windgall forming? Is it on inside or the outside, cannot tell from the pics. From what I understand, Windgalls are hot and swollen initially then they settle down.

Either way, Id get a scan, just for peace of mind..

Echo what O_B says (sorry was eating supper) - fingers Xed it is simply a windgall and nothing more serious - she shouldn't be lame for long if that is what it is. Have a hug and give Dolly a kick up the arse from me x
