I know this should be in the veterinary section but I thought I might get some more info here...

Grace was 2 stage vetted this morning and passed without any fuss. However, I brought her in from the field tonight and she is quite lame on her near hind. On a straight line she is not too bad, but in trot it is noticeable. But on a small circle she is really very sore.

It looks to me as though she has pulled something high up... so I walked her around for 15 mins to keep it moving as I know how stiff something can get if just left (from my point of view anyway).

So, I am thinking of getting the vet out tomorrow if she is any worse, but would you walk her out for 15mins again in the morning she see whether it eases up with some movement, or just get the vet out if she looks as bad if not worse?

I don't have any bute or danilon otherwise I would have given her one in her dinner tonight... I thought if I got the vet out I could get some sort of anti-immflamatory for her, as it's just like us taking an anadin when we have done something.

Thanks

Rebecca

Sorry to hear she is sore but great news that she passed the vetting.
Is there any way you could keep her out tonight? If she has tweaked a muscle she would be far better exercising gently by walking around thatn being stabled. Quite often these things will seem much better in the morning she had possibly only just done it! You may find a physio better than a vet if it is muscular.

No, they are not allowed out at night on the yard where I am unfortunately...

I don't really want to go into the physio thing just yet. I have had too many bad experiences with them if I am honest, and have only just had her checked by a well thought of osteo. I find the physios I have used tell you they need to come back more times than they do. The osteo said she was absolutely 100% fine and did not need to come back until 6 months time.

Hmm its a difficult one isn't it. I have a fab physio who is so honest and definatly not in it for the money. Trouble is vets always tend to look for boney problems and I have found can overlook muscular ones. See how she is tomorrow then rest may do her good!

this happened to my horse-he pulled a muscle in his stifle area being silly in the field. No noticeable swelling/heat but lame behind. Was on bute + box rest + walked for 15 mins about 4/5 times a day for a couple of weeks
hope this helps!

Thanks... I am just hoping and praying that she does not miss the Area

The lameness is not major, more uncomfortable.

Yes, she could have been kicked but I don't think that is what is causing the lameness. To me it looks as though she might have tweaked something.

Could it be tying up? Just a thought as when Ali appeared to be lame and I thought it was due to him injuring himself at the top of his hind leg, it was actually tying up.

Definitely not tying up, seen that quite a lot with a horse I used to look after when its owner was away... no other signs and she was vetted this morning at 11am and lame at 4pm when brought in from the field covered in mud so had obviously been looning about.

IMHO it sounds like she's "twanged" something in her back whilst out in the field. Just had this last week with one of mine, he was dragging one of his hind legs in a most alarming way. Took him to our back lady, he had got himself in a bit of a mess, but she sorted him out and he's back to normal now.

I personally never just give a horse a bute if it's come up lame and don't know what it is - it masks the pain if they're turned out and if you also then need to get a vet out they wouldn't see the full extent of the problem. I would rest for a couple of days and see if there's any improvement. If not then get the vet - would never go to physio/ back person/ osteo/ etc unless I knew (again) exactly if there was a problem. Someone like that could actually make the problem worse if it is something else.
